Durham University Graduates formally received their degrees in absentia this week, after formal ceremonies were postponed until the summer of 2022. The University has confirmed it “expects to life some restrictions” in light of government Covid-19 rules being relaxed from July 19th. In an email to all students and staff, the University said it is “currently working through the implications of the announcement”. They will send a “detailed update following the next Government announcement”, due on Monday 12th July. St Cuthbert’s Society JCR has received condemnation after a comment was posted from its official Facebook account that has been described as “Sinophobic” and  “outdated and malicious”. The comment was posted under a Facebook status about the cancellation of St Cuthbert’s Society summer ball. Responding to a question of why it had been cancelled, the JCR account claimed that it was “because somebody in Wuhan ate a bat in late 2019”. Correspondence seen by Palatinate shows that students who have to isolate in Hope Estates properties beyond the end of their contracts will be forced to pay for at least four weeks extra rent. Hope Estates said: “If our new tenants cannot move in on the date of the 1 st they will need compensating. If the tenant(s) […] cannot or will not move out on the 30 th then I’m afraid they will be charged the extra rent for a minimum of 4wks. This will allow the tenants to be compensated for  the time lost on the beginning of the contract.
