Prosecutors say Marine veteran Paul Herbert claimed he was wounded in Iraq after the Gulf War to get disability benefits and a Purple Heart.
A U.S. Marine veteran determined to receive a Purple Heart medal lied about suffering severe injuries during a roadside explosion in northern Iraq, according to federal prosecutors.
"Mr. Herbert's alleged conduct is an affront to every veteran who has sacrificed to earn the honor of a Purple Heart and who is deserving of disability benefits."
He also stole over $344,000 in veterans disability benefits, federal prosecutors in Massachusetts say.
A former Marine from Massachusetts has been arrested for allegedly stealing benefit payments from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
