SunStar February 27, 2021 MALLS seem to be the thing for netizens nowadays. In a warm country like ours, spacious malls with comfortable airconditioning is daily drawing hordes inside these premises. In Baguio City, the mall on top of the hill also attracts crowds for the warm temperature during the cold months, and relaxing temperature during the summer months. Besides, it offers spacious and secure parking spaces for reasonable fees. Malls offer a variety of services where one can buy groceries, including fresh vegetables, meat, seafoods, clothing, waited restaurants, sit-in turo-turo food mart, hardware supplies and other household items. There are also spaces for banks, realty and insurance agents, and medical and dental clinics, among others. Movie houses are also accessible in other malls elsewhere in the country. ....
SunStar February 05, 2021 WHENEVER the City Government agrees to host a tourism promotion event designed by out-of-town agencies, the city mayor is placed in a touchy image standing among his constituents and neighbors in Benguet province. Mayor Ben Magalong suffered another backlash when a hotel recently opened its premises for a birthday celebration that accommodated a huge crowd, a violation of Covid-19 protection protocols. The celebrant, a known national artist, reportedly was launching a local fabric that would promote tourism and bolster the economy of the city and the region. Several months ago, the city administration agreed to open her doors to tourists riding in bus loads coming from the Ilocos provinces, including Pangasinan without consulting Benguet towns that encircles the city. That program was initiated by the Department of Tourism opening the three major routes leading to the city through the towns of Tuba and Sablan. ....
SunStar + SEVERAL annual events in the city and La Trinidad were recently called-off by local authorities. Foremost are the Panagbenga Fair in the city set in February and the Strawberry Festival in La Trinidad a few weeks later. Both events are geared to jumpstart the tourism months in the summer that draw thousands of tourists to the city and the Capital Town of Benguet. The cancelations of these events, initiated by the respective local government officials, are commendable for health security from the coronavirus epidemic that ensnared the lives of thousands of Filipinos and some three million persons around the globe. Benguet, which geographically enclose Baguio City, has been in the top five list of coronavirus-infected provinces in the country. ....
SunStar THERE are several meritorious ordinances or local laws that fail presumably due to non-implementation. These ordinances were adopted with the best of intentions to maintain safe and clean environment, and above all, comfortable living. Of late, the Baguio City Council has adopted an ordinance banning the chewing of “moma” quid and/or spitting. Voting was not unanimous with nine in favor, two against, and one abstention. The propose ordinance is forwarded to the city mayor for his approval or disapproval. (Moma chewing has three basic ingredients: betel nut, hapid or green leaves, and lime powder ensuing to red colored saliva / sputum. Others add tobacco.) ....
