Going to be a question i m sure everyone is going to be trying to descend on. i do wonder if it s the pentagon, or somewhere else, they have some idea of what that might be. it seems the pentagon has been clear in the public statements that this was not just a weather balloon, that it was for some sort of military application and surveillance. this suggests to me they know something about it, and i think we ll hopefully learn more in the coming weeks. let me follow by asking you, do you think that payload could be neutralized? do you think it could still be capable of collecting data, and do you think the u.s. could glean data from it? i think all of that is possible. i really don t know, i don t have enough data or information about what that payload was. we re pretty good, you know, the united states technology in terms of recovery, i would imagine we d be able to learn quite a bit about it. we did water for several, days it seems. they watched in terms of signaling, some repor ....

Officials simply aren t buying china s claim this was an errant weather balloon. one senior administration official i spoke with last need said they are confident that china was trying to seek and gather information over possible military sites. additionally, they ve been pointing to some of the technical components of this balloon, things like that collection pod and also the solar panels that were located on that metal truss below it. they re arguing ha is not consistent with steve meteorological devices. as president biden asked his team to formulate plans for shooting down this balloon, he really was taking two things into consideration. one, he wanted to maximize the safety of americans, but he also was very explicit that he wanted to ensure that they were maximizing their ability to recover that payload, trying to glean as much information about this device as possible. that is what is under way right now through this recovery ....

Let me just say that obviously the governors of any state that the balloon is passing over would want to be briefed, especially if taking down that balloon could cause harm to the people underneath. and when you find out that it was carrying a payload, the equivalent of three buses, that s a lot of material that if it were to come crashing down could really hurt and kill people. so i think what the biden administration did was the right thing, to shoot it down when it was over shallow water so they could retrieve it and not have all the equipment destroyed but actually be able to retrieve it for analysis. obviously the chinese say it s only a weather balloon. but, you know, the united states said basically the same thing when in 1960, our u-2 airplane with gary powers was shot down from 80,000 feet above russia. and we at the same time said it was just for gathering ....

Chinese could be trying to gather, and the fact that there are buttons that have been seen over other parts of the world. where do you think it likely could have been launched from? what kind of data would have been gleaned possibly from a balloon like this, and your expert opinion? yeah, i m not sure where it was launched from. it will be curious to learn more. it seems very clear that there was some sort of plan to launch multiple balloons. i think that s what s remarkable, at least from what we know. this is not an isolated there are others out there. it seems to me that there would be some sort of data or information that they d collect that was maybe alternative sensors, things that they thought they needed to use, a different kind of sensor package for. it s a little confounding, to be honest, the more worried about. it why they thought a balloon 60, 65,000 feet would not be detected. it is not a small objects. i think that really speaks to why they took such caution to actua ....
