Taipei, March 24 (CNA) A fleet of 500 drones will be deployed to carry out aerial light displays at the 2022 Penghu International Fireworks Festival, which starts in April, the organizers said Thursday.

Tourists to Penghu County would not be charged fees when they visit this year, the Penghu Tourism Department said yesterday.
Some Penghu residents have proposed a travel tax or a fee for visitors from Taiwan proper, warning that tourism has exceeded capacity in the past few years.
Department data show that visitor numbers to Penghu in July last year rose by 37 percent from the same month in 2019.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The 2021 Penghu International Fireworks Festival featuring 23 shows will run from April 22 to June 28, according to a press release by Penghu County’s Tourism Department.
The festival is one of Taiwan’s most popular and longest-running tourism events, featuring magnificent fireworks and attracting hundreds of thousands of tourists to the archipelago every year.
The fireworks festival will hold shows every Monday and Thursday at the Guanyinting Recreation Area in Magong City on Penghu's main island. In addition, Saturday night shows on May 8, May 22, and June 5 will take place on Qimei Island, Wang-an Island, and Jibei Island, respectively.
The department said 2021 is the 19th anniversary of the festival and that this year’s drone and fireworks shows will include elements of the Line Friends franchise.

Mermaid lantern to return
An award-winning giant mermaid-themed lantern featured in last year’s Penghu International Bay Light Festival is to be reintroduced in the Penghu International Fireworks Festival on Penghu County’s Jibei Islet (吉貝嶼) on June 5. The 8m lantern would be the festival’s main highlight and illumiate the islet’s pristine beaches, the Penghu Tourism Department said. It was first showcased in last year’s light festival from Sept. 19 to Nov. 7 and later won a prize in the MUSE Creative Awards organized by the New York-based International Awards Associates. The fireworks festival is to be centered around Magong (馬公) from April 22 to June 28.

Taipei, Feb. 26 (CNA) An award-winning giant mermaid-shaped lantern featured during last year's international light festival in Penghu will be reintroduced on Jibei Island at the 2021 Penghu International Fireworks Festival on June 5.
The county's Tourism Department said Friday that the 8-meter tall mermaid lantern will be the main highlight in the upcoming festival and is being brought in to create a romantic image of Jibei Island's pristine beaches through artistic light displays.
The lantern was first showcased during the Sept. 19-Nov. 7 Penghu Bay International Light Festival last year and later went on to win the MUSE Creative Awards, a design award created by the New York-based International Awards Associates in 2015.
