YOUNGSTOWN The city’s design review committee approved exterior plans for three projects: the Penguin City Brewing Co., Stambaugh Auditorium and Ohio Urban Renaissance. Penguin City bought a former Republic Steel warehouse at 460 E. Federal St. for $575,000 in December and is planning a $3.7 million renovation. The 32,704-square-foot location should open in September or October, Annissa Neider, the project’s architect, told the committee at a Tuesday meeting. The exterior work includes painting, replacing broken windows and panels, installing a front patio with fencing, improving the parking lot and doing landscaping. New signs will be placed on the building including one on the south side that will read: “Tough times don’t last, tough cities do!” ....

Cider House & Winery about 1,300 square feet of what’s really now storage and office space she intends to transform into a production facility and tasting room just south of downtown. She envisions the cider house and winery having that coffeehouse-type vibe small, intimate and full of charm. “It’s going to be small, quaint, but for me starting out, it’s the perfect size, especially the fact the production space is right here,” said Ferguson, 38, believed to be only black female brewer in the state. ....

Jan 1, 2021 OUTDOOR FUN: The Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown, will cut the ribbon 3:15 p.m. Monday on its Winter Campus. The campus features a high-quality synthetic ice rink that provides an authentic ice skating experience throughout the season, regardless of weather. The rink will be open through March 28 and will provide free public skating for the community and a curling lane for recreation and competitive play. It also will be available to rent. Snacks and hot chocolate will be available for purchase. The campus offers quality outdoor physical and social activities during the late fall and winter. Major sponsors are Western Reserve Health Foundation, the Youngstown Foundation, and the J. Ford Crandall Memorial Foundation. Other sponsors are Dom’s Ice House, Acme Steak and Seafood, Real Living Volpini Realty Group, and Penguin City Brewing Co.
