Board members explained that the resignation announcements came in response to a statewide May 15 deadline by which nontenured staff must be notified if they will not be hired the following year. Teachers in such cases often opt to resign rather than have a firing on their record. However, the board gave no explanation for how they managed to interview at least eight staff members proposed for hiring at the same meeting where the resignations were announced. More typically, the district spends the summer recruiting replacements for spring vacancies. "Are these teachers with proven expertise, or those with Pequannock connections?" asked former trustee Liz Carr during the public comment section of the meeting, referencing School Superintendent Brett Charleston's hiring from the Pequannock Township School district in July 2019.
