The All-Africa Students Union has joined calls by global governing body United Nations and others like UNESCO to celebrate women and girls in Science and to demand more towards boosting interest and career choices of women in Science.
The continental student body in a statement issued on 11th February 2021 to observe the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, charged stakeholders to commit fully to addressing gender stereotypes against women in STEM circles.
Across the world, “women account for less than 30% of researchers in Science”: the statement said. It further added that: “UNESCO estimates that even in schools, just about 3% of all students enrolling for ICT programmes are girls, with only 5% enrolling in Natural Science, Mathematics and Statistics”.

Personal Testimonies, Pledges Mark the Start of the 'Fair Share to End Child Labour' Campaign


152 million children are subjected to child labour. Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi has brought together former child workers, international organisations, global youth, business and education leaders for a global campaign to save them
Selimatha Salifu, a former child labourer from Ghana, is now a teacher working with children and encouraging them to continue their education. Salifu is one of two former child activists who addressed United Nations officials, business, faith, union, education and youth leaders from around the world at the virtual launch of the ‘Fair Share to End Child Labour’ campaign on Jan. 21.
UNITED NATIONS, Jan 22 2021 (IPS) - Selimatha Salifu of Ghana is a former child labourer who has vowed to do her part to bring attention to the plight of the world’s over 150 million child labourers. Raised in a fishing community, she recalls her days buying fish to sell, working from daybreak till nightfall to contribute to her family. She credits the General Agriculture Workers Union for rescuing her and ensuring she enrolled in school.

AASU Calls For Action To End Surge In Child Labour As WHO Predicts 66m Children Falling Into Extreme Poverty


 
Campaigners of Child’s right are devastated over the increasing number of all forms of child labour across the globe due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that about 66 million children will fall into extreme poverty as a result of the economic crisis posed by the pandemic, adding to the already existing 386 million already living in extreme poverty.
Speaking at virtual campaign launch to mark the United Nation’s (UN) year for the elimination of child labour, themed, “Fair Share to end child labour” organized by Kailash Satyarhi Children’s Foundation, Dr. Tedros Adhanom indicated that WHO is poised to prioritize the health needs of individuals during and after the pandemic and also ensure that children have their fair share of resources to make life bearable.

The education of over 11 million young girls hang in the balance as they are likely to remain home during the 2021 academic year as a result of the covid-19 pandemic.
To this end, the General Secretary of All-Africa Students Union (AASU), Mr. Peter Kwasi Kodjie is urging governments across the continent to take drastic measures to ensure the education of these vulnerable girls is not truncated.
In his solidarity message for 2021 to African governments and students on the continent, the Secretary-General of the largest student organization in Africa outlined several challenges impeding education in Africa, prominent amongst them being child labour.

AASU Congratulates Akufo-Addo For Winning The 2020 Presidential Race


 
The All Africa-Students Union (AASU), has joined the international community and well-wishers to congratulate President elect of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for retaining his seat in the just ended presidential and parliamentary polls.
The General Secretary of AASU, Peter Kwasi KODJIE, in a laudatory statement, also commended Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) for acquitting itself creditably in superintending a free, fair, and credible elections to the admiration of the world. 
The President, per the Electoral Commission’s verdict, pulled 6,730, 413 which is 51.59% of the total valid cast nationwide on December 7, while his closest contender, John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) polled 6, 214, 889 which gave him 47.36% of the total votes cast.

The All Africa-Students Union (AASU) has joined the international community and well-wishers to congratulate the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on his re-election.
The General Secretary of AASU, Peter Kwasi Kodjie, in a laudatory statement, also commended Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) for acquitting itself creditably in superintending over “a free, fair, and credible elections” to the admiration of the world.
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, on Wednesday declared Akufo-Addo winner of the 2020 presidential elections, after defeating John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress.
Akufo-Addo won by 51.59% of the total votes cast as against Mahama’s 6,214,889 representing 47.36%. Akufo-Addo polled a total of 6,70,413 votes out of the total votes of 14, 434, 574.
