Demand for diesel drops, petrol remains stable: Oil Ministry

The consumption of diesel, which accounts for 38% of total refined products demand in the country, had contracted 3% year-on-year in November after an unusual 6% growth in the April-October period. Diesel is mainly used in long-haul transport, backup generators, mining, and farming.

NEW DELHI: Rising coronavirus infections, prompting a slew of local lockdowns across the country, are threatening to slow recovery in fuel demand as stronger containment measures will hit economic activity, officials said on Monday.
After Maharashtra, Delhi and Rajasthan have imposed limited period lockdowns, which will impact travel and business activity. Other states have implemented curfews at different times of the day and of varying durations.

Petrol usage in India jumps 27% to four-month high, shows data

Gasoline demand in India rose to a four-month high in March as millions of people favored cars over public transport, with one of the world’s most populous nations seeing a resurgence in virus cases.
Motor fuel demand rose to 88,380 tons per day last month, the highest level since November last year, according to official data.
Gasoline sales surged 27 per cent from March last year, when local demand collapsed due to the roll-out of strict lockdowns to stem the spread of Covid-19.
India’s daily overall consumption of oil products fell in March from February, as demand for diesel, the most popular fuel, declined. While the pandemic has provided a shot in the arm for gasoline use — more people are opting for private transport over buses and trains — the roll-out of lockdowns as India suffers a second wave of coronavirus infections may hamper the oil demand recovery.

Covid-19 and winter push cooking gas consumption above petrol in India

A fuel primarily used for cooking has surpassed fuel as India’s second most popular oil product following a boost from a government buying program, cold weather and stay-at-home orders due to Covid-19.
Consumption in 2020 of liquefied petroleum gas -- which is also used for heating -- was higher than motor fuel for the first time ever over a calendar year, data from the government showed. Demand got an additional boost later in the year following a six-month extension of a government program providing free LPG cylinders to lower-income people and an early start to winter.
While LPG use rose as more people cooked at home due to tighter coronavirus restrictions, India’s full-year consumption of fuel never fully recovered from a collapse in demand during a nationwide lockdown in the second-quarter of 2020.
