How a man called Phil and a walrus called Smooshi saved each other's lives

“When I imprinted on her… F***. That changes your life immediately. Once an animal starts to look at you with those eyes and does it every single day and now you’re the thing she’s attached to… Oh, my God.”
It was the moment that changed the direction of Phil Demers’ life forever. The disenfranchised MarineLand animal trainer was now a “mum” to a young walrus called Smooshi and their already close relationship began to blossom.
“The thing that really struck me was I realised how difficult it was for me to leave Smooshi, just on a daily basis, but I saw just how difficult it was for her when I would leave with how frantic she would be,” says Demers. “That was unnatural. I’m not her mum. But whereas Smooshi had temporary relief in that odd, strange world, the rest of the other animals never had that.”
