People in Sierra Mixe, a mountainous region in southern Mexico, have been cultivating an unusual variety of giant corn for thousands of years. They grow the crop on soils deficient in nitrogen, an essential nutrient, and use little additional fertiliser. Despite this, their corn towers over standard varieties, reaching heights of more than 16 feet.
