On Sunday, April 30, 2023, Raylene Kimball passed on to the next life. She was my wife, best friend, confidant, travel partner and the light of my life. We, who knew and loved her, miss her greatly.

We need to remember the traditional teachings of Native Americans and use them as a starting point rather than trying to fit them into the curriculum wherever it seems convenient.

In 1990 President George H.W. Bush signed a resolution designating November as National American Indian Heritage Month. November then is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions and histories and to acknowledge the significant contributions of Indigenous people. I have been blessed to have known many people from various cultures during my seven decades on planet Earth. This past month reminded me how much I have learned from them, especially from my Native American friends.

In 1950, Red Lake’s Peter Graves, who was Secretary of the Tribal Council said, "Education, we believe, is the only salvation for Indian people."
