Massachusetts Fishing Report – January 14, 2021 Hilltown Ponds are hot! While the wait is on for winter to start behaving like it close to the coast, those seeking safe ice have been on the move. Should you decide that you simply can’t wait for neighborhood water bodies to cap over, point your ride to the valleys and the hills! Massachusetts Fishing Report I was pleasantly surprised when David of Merrimack Sports spilled the beans on a number of ice fishing options in the Merrimack Valley. First on the list was Millvale Pond which was producing good numbers of rainbows, bass and pickerel but the number which most stuck out was 7”, which was the average depth of ice! Other spots that have been producing are Plugs Pond, Rock Pond, Country Pond and Tuxbury Pond. For hardwater junkies, skim ice and frozen puddles (however fleeting) have been a tease about what hopefully is just around the corner. In the blink of an eye water bodies could “catch” and open water will have to wait until spring. With that in mind it might be a good idea to get in your casting licks now while you can. Massachusetts Fishing Report The best open water options according to Pete from Belsan Bait and Tackle in Scituate remain trout ponds from Plymouth through the Cape, however, there is always the possibility of hooking mackerel off Cedar Point. Your chances of hooking a special trout from shore will continue to improve as water bodies “turnover” which happens when the surface dips to 39 degrees, sinks and dissolves the thermocline resulting in a flushing out of deeper water holdover trout (and bait). Several years ago I witness ....
