Are you an alternative therapist?
This is for you!
2020 and 2021 – Two years in which our health was frequently compromised by the pandemic. Feeling strong physically and psychologically has never been so important in order to face these unusual times.
Despite creating serious problems and damages for therapists, during the pandemic people raised their level of awareness of the importance of their well-being, whether physically or psychologically, in different areas.
The Portugal News understands how difficult it has been for many therapists who, many times, have had to reinvent themselves and adapt to new technological means, resorting to “Zoom”, “WhatsApp” and “Teams” to continue following their patients, whenever it is possible. In addition to the fact that many clients may have lost their jobs or incomes.

Where did you read that print is dead?

Where did you read that print is dead?

Latest research has shown that print is far from dead, in fact its one of the best ways to assimilate information.
What we read in print is much more likely to remain with you, unlike what we read on a screen. There is a fundamental difference in the two alternative ways to gain information, and to retain it.
When I first read some of the research I was not convinced, yet when I thought it out it made a lot of sense. Electronic or screen readers are ‘skimmers’. Ziming Liu at San Jose State University found that when participants in his studies looked at material on screens, they skim read – that is, they sampled the first line of text, then looked for key words instead of reading line by line.

Supporting live music

Calling all musicians! Whether you are a solo musician, a band, a singer, an instrumentalist or a DJ, we would really like to help to promote you with a free advert in our newspaper.
The Portugal News is dedicated to supporting live music, locally in the Algarve but also throughout the rest of Portugal.
We understand how difficult the pandemic has been for the cultural sector due to constraints from the pandemic: with the enforcement of social distancing and with many shows cancelled or postponed, limits on numbers attending shows and further restrictions at venues, it has meant that sadly usual concerts have not been able to take place, which has negatively impacted so many musicians in regards to their income.

According to press reports the UK Home Office has approved a Metropolitan Police request for 350,000 Pounds of extra funding to try to convict a prime suspect in Madeleine McCann's disappearance from Luz Bay in 2007
This case, Operation Grange, has already cost the UK tax payer £12.5 million since it was launched in 2011. Convicted paedophile and rapist Christian B was named by German police last year as the prime suspect for her abduction and murder. But a source close to the case told The Portugal News ‘I’m not sure they have the right man, nor obviously are they’ (the Met). However, Christian B is yet to be quizzed over Madeleine's disappearance and says that he is innocent. It is claimed that dramatic new clues have come to light recently.

Foreign resident voting registration confusion

Foreign resident voting registration confusion

The registration deadline for the 2021 municipal elections ends on 27 July however, while many foreign residents are eligible to vote, difficulties in registering have been reported.
Every four years, citizens choose their municipal leaders but while nationals are automatically registered, foreigners have to go to their Junta de Freguesia (Parish Council) to make their registration in order to be able to vote in the next elections, on 26 September.
The deadline for registration ends 60 days before election day, specifically on 27 July. This means that expats only have few days left to guarantee that they have their say in Portuguese politics.

Another "bomb" hits restaurants - The Portugal News

Another “bomb” hits restaurants

Restaurant owners and managers talk about the limitations that having to present a certificate or self-test brings to a sector that is already severely weakened after 16 months of the pandemic.
With empty tables, some Algarve businesses are being faced with another “bomb” since the entry into force of the new measure that forbids people without a digital certificate or without a negative self-test from being able to have dinner inside restaurants, in high and very high risk counties, during the weekend.
“Every time a new announcement comes out, people get scared and the business stops completely and then after a few days it comes back. But now this was really a bomb for the restaurants”, said Bella de Rose, owner of Ciao Baby Trattoria – Pizzeria in Alvor.

Bev Lightyear and the astroguests

Bev Lightyear and the astroguests
Watch out for the ‘Wild Duck’ clusters and more.
One of the advantages of Algarve living is not just the bright and deep blue sky that we get to enjoy for over 300 days a year, but after our nearest and dearest star dips down over the horizon, the lack of clouds and light pollution means that (at least on nights when the moon doesn’t steal the show) all the other stars in the sky can shine bright and unobstructed and this creates the ideal conditions for marvelling at (and studying) the cosmos.
This is what first drew English couple Bev and Jan Ewan-Smith here back in the 1980’s and drove them to found the COAA (Centro de Observação Astronómica no Algarve) in 1987. The centre is located near Portimão and having been here for so long it’s a very well known astronomy holiday centre. However, since we at The Portugal News are on a mission to bring you star-related content for this, our Star Section, I thought I would go and try to discover them for myself. Satellites beamed down my location to Google Maps and I eventually found myself outside this cute Portuguese house. I wondered if maybe I’d escaped Google’s orbit, but then I saw the tents that hide the telescopes in the garden.
