Adviser to president obama and jeef cnn analyst jeffrey toobin. david, you wrote that you had cried when the affordable care act passed back in 2010. as someone who spent so much time with president obama working to pass that law, what is your reaction to what the supreme court has ruled? relief. it was a little anticlimactic because most people deadduced deduced from the arguments earlier in the year that the affordable care act would survive. but still, this was the last major challenge in terms of throwing the whole act out. that was what was being asked. there are some other legal issues that are rooting around out there that may still surface. i think this was a watershed event. for all of the people who have benefited from the law and all of the people who will, i feel a great sense of relief. the reason i wept was because i had my own battles with the health care system when i have a child with a chronic illness, epilepsy, pre-existing condition. and it was hell to deal with t ....
Been before the supreme court. i do want to thank the team at the california department of justice. we initiated along with some 20 plus other states this case to defend the affordable care act and it s a great victory, not just for those who believed in the affordable care act, but for the 131 million or so americans who have a preexisting condition who can have peace of mind today, to the 31 million americans who have insurance as a result of the affordable care act, they can have peace of mind. it s great news. this was a 7-2 decision from a conservative court. we had, you know, amy coney barrett, brett kavanaugh, you had clarence thomas and, of course, chief justice roberts, all siding with the majority here. are you surprised by that? you know, these days perhaps common sense surprises people, but it was pretty clear that the case that was being made by them in the state of texas as we speak, and texas is the state that initiated the case, there was no basis for it. they had n ....
Why has this law proven to be so resilient in court? well, i think in the last analysis it s because it s been a very popular law. congress does things, they have consequences and the courts are supposed to defer to congress for the most part. and here you have 31 million people have access to health care at all through obamacare, 135 million people have provisions that protect them in various ways. so it probably affects two-thirds of this country whether you ve got a kid who s 25 years old and who s on your health insurance or whether you have a preexisting condition or whether you no longer have to pay co-pays on your preventive care and on and on and on. people like this law. it s interesting, elliot, because over the last ten years the first time it was upheld by a 5-4 decision, the supreme ....
District, there has not been a decision so we will keep the mask policy until then. the school board will make a decision during its june meeting. what factors do you want the district to consider? we know that covid is generally affecting children, we know they are not vectors. doctors and scientists coming out of the woodwork saying this isn t affecting children. we do know this illness is affecting elderly people or people with autoimmune or some type of illness besides covid. some preexisting condition so it makes sense for our children to be children and unmasked at this point and get their lives back, ....
so if i m the parent of a 12-year-old, let s say, who has a preexisting condition or has a preexisting heart condition, should this revelation give me pause, or should i still get my 12-year-old vaccinated, do you think? well, jeff, for sure it s going to give people pause if they have children with a preexisting heart condition. so let s let things calm down a little bit, we ll wait for some more cdc reports to offer reassurance to those parents who have those few children with heart conditions. other parents, parents of children who don t have the heart condition, bring them in to be vaccinated, please. so let s talk about the numbers, because cases in the u.s. are now at their lowest point in almost a year. is that about the pace of vaccinations or is this about warmer weather, or is it both things colliding in a big way? i don t know about that warmer weather. last summer we had a big surge in cases, so we re not so big on ....
