Hungary and Poland had pushed the European Commission to take a tough stance on migration throughout the more than two years of talks on the EU’s trade and political agreement with the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific community. So few can have been genuinely surprised when Hungary dropped its veto bomb on Thursday, even if the new EU–ACP treaty is about as unambitious as they come. “There is no need for fresh migration waves, especially now,” Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said bluntly.
