Bittersweet : UE Class of 2020 kicks off commencement weekend with belated ceremony

View Comments EVANSVILLE, Ind.  The University of Evansville s Class of 2020 returned Friday night to close a chapter of their lives upended by the COVID-19 pandemic at the tail-end of their senior year of college.  Members of the Class of 2020 attended commencement  at the Ford Center Friday, albeit 12 months a little bit late, University President Christopher Pietruszkiewicz noted in his remarks. Last year s graduation was postponed because of the pandemic. The delayed celebration was held ahead of the Class of 2021 s commencement events on Saturday.   Out of the more than 400 that graduated in 2020, more than 130 former students attended, with some traveling from other cities and states to be there in person.

Last December, UE announced an academic realignment plan that would possibly have eliminated 17 majors from the university. Thursday’s announcement includes changes to academics, athletics and administration. Officials say it ensures that UE will continue to offer 75+ majors and remain a part of Division I athletics.

As 14 News previously reported, the President’s plan would cut three departments, 17 majors and nearly 40 faculty members. Among the protesters included faculty, students, alumni and other community members. Protesters told 14 News they lined up along Lincoln Avenue in an attempt to make a statement to UE administrators, saying they don’t want to see majors like Spanish, music or religion be cut.
