Plane door opened in midair after chaplain pulled the emergency exit lever. 12 people were hurt when the door flew open moments before landing. they say the plane landed safely and police arrested the man who opened the door. here to react, pilot, aviation analysts and former faa safety team representative kyle bailey, welcome to the set, thanks for coming in. can you explain in simple terms what happened here, why we should or shouldn't be worried about it? >> he was fiddling with the door, the plane wasn't pressurized because you don't need oxygen below 10,000 feet, the pressurization system...
Struck some real vital thing, i think the pilots could handle it. i'm not saying there couldn't be a problem but the odds of it being a major problem for the pilots, i don't think is big. it's not a big problem. >> well, you know, we have a pilot with us. john, what do you know about the prospect of it damaging literally the flight, the safety of that flight, were a gun to go off inside of a plane? >> the only concern would be damage to the aircraft's systems. as far as putting a hole in the airplane, the pressurization system can handle that. and so, i -- it would never be anything that we wo...
Background checked. he's been vetted. he is known to people and an airline employees walk back and forth and get on and off of planes quite frequently. this is when the maintenance is done and the cleaning is done so having a valid airline id would allow him access to the airplane which is appropriate, but the investigation is going to look into all of those things to see if there was a way that this could have been prevented, but as i say, the investigation is just getting started so we ned to let that process unfold. >> right. and john, we heard earlier him speaking with the tower and he com...
Wolf. it's unlikely however. i think what you have here is not the typical template for an emergency situation, which would be -- think of sully. you declare an emergency. it's a mayday. you look for the nearest landing field. you certainly wouldn't continue on to a mountain range if you had a problem like this. was the crew incapacitated or was there a problem with the pressurization system which allowed them to -- and they couldn't get a radio call off? was the plane not set up for altitude hold on the autopilot and it went down without them being awake, if you will? i suppose that's a possi...
