Logistics firm criticised for paying bonuses while claiming UK furlough support

Last modified on Sun 9 May 2021 09.29 EDT
A US-owned delivery and warehousing firm that counts Marks & Spencer and Asos among its clients has come under fire for giving bosses multimillion-pound bonuses while claiming furlough support funded by UK taxpayers.
XPO Logistics paid $6.4m (£4.6m) in cash bonuses for 2020, including $3.3m to Brad Jacobs, the Connecticut-based company’s chief executive and chairman, according to its annual report.
The firm’s top three executives also received share options worth more than $27m, and a new incentive scheme could result in them splitting a further $144m over six years.
Data from HM Revenue and Customs shows that six of the company’s UK subsidiaries claimed a total of between £12m and £25m in furlough support between December 2020 and February, the only months for which data is available.

Anya Hindmarch is saving the high street: 'We can't let shops die - we just need to be brave'

From Monday week (May 17), Pont Street – a Chelsea thoroughfare that runs off Sloane Street – is under new ownership. Anya Hindmarch, entrepreneur, handbag designer extraordinaire, one-time business ambassador for the UK and thoughtful environmentalist, will have her name above five shops there. That’s most of the first block.
She’s calling the project A Village. There’s the bespoke flagship she’s had there for 15 years – a magnet for just about every royal and rocker you’ve heard of – plus The Labelled Shop, dedicated to the fine art of organisation (one of her obsessions), and The Village Hall, an evolving concept space that for now houses an Anya Hair Salon which, although it can’t promise a long blonde mane like hers, will deliver “shampoos, therapy, coffee and champagne”.

Retail experts hope “screen fatigue” will encourage Scots to keep shopping “for real” beyond the initial post-lockdown bounce.
New data from the Scottish Retail Consortium (SRC) shows the number of people visiting shops around the country perked up during April as non-essential retailing got back up and running.
SRC has reported a 14.2 percentage point improvement from March 2021, when only essential retailing was allowed.

LETTER: 'East Street cannot return to traffic free-for-all'

Card image cap

I WOULD like to comment on the future of East Street in Taunton, and whether this street should be reopened to traffic.
I retired in 2018 after 35 years as a town and transport planner, which included involvement in developing bus routes serving the centre of a major regional city.
Taunton is a sub-regional centre of 70,000 people; it is not a small market town.
A centre of that size requires a reliable bus service.
Before the pandemic, congestion arising from the use of East Street by general traffic could result in delays to buses of 15-20 minutes over the short distance from Castle Way to the top of East Reach.

Irish people queue 5 HOURS for Penneys shopping appointment

Primark's first store, which is still in operation, was opened in 1969 on Mary Street in Dublin under the brand Penneys, hence the name contrast in Ireland compared to the rest of the world. Today Primark owns over 370 stores across 12 countries, including in America.

Penneys is seen as an institution in Ireland and when they opened their doors after the first Irish lockdown in the summer of 2020, hundreds of people queued to get into the stores.
The clever marketing tactic by the company created a frenzy online, with the virtual queuing system seeing such a volume of traffic that shoppers are waiting more than five hours to book an appointment.

There was always a room in your house your mates weren’t allowed in

Everyone had a rich friend in school. They might not necessarily be the child of a millionaire, but they were definitely richer than the rest of your group. They were the ones with Disney Channel, always had new clothes for mufti day and of course had one of those fridges with an ice dispenser. If you’re feeling like you don’t think anyone in your group was like this, then chances are you were the rich friend.
