Ghanaian designer Aphia Sakyi has recently come under the spotlight after some of her accessories were spotted on characters in the movie ‘Coming 2 America’.
Speaking on Showbiz A-Z , she revealed that she was contacted via email to create some accessories for the movie.
Aphia Sakyi stated that she was originally contracted to make only one accessory, however, she was asked to create others later.
“They first bought a piece from us and see how it will complement the look they have. So after the first piece, they felt they needed more pieces to be able to style more designs,” she said.

13 Things I Did (And Did Not) Love About 'Coming 2 America': An African Perspective

In the 1990s, I watched
Coming to America as a young medical student in Nigeria. I loved Eddie Murphy's character Akeem (a common name in Nigeria) – quick wit, rakish charm, carefree — and the wealth of the African nation Zamunda, a nice contrast to typical depictions of Africa as poor.
Now, 22 years after graduation from medical school, I watched its sequel,
Coming 2 America.
Like its predecessor, it's funny and silly and has a happy ending. And I know that it's a comedy, so we're not supposed to take it too seriously.
But I did think about how the movie portrays Africa. Here are 6 things I loved about the African content — and 7 things I did not love. Warning: spoilers abound!

“Coming to America” was a blockbuster hit when it was released 33 years ago, boasting success in the U.S. box office and worldwide. Starring Eddie Murphy as Prince Akeem Joffer and Arsenio Hall as his best friend and adviser Semmi, the film follows an affluent African prince who visits New York on a quest to meet his queen-to-be; it memorably finds enrapturing comedy in the contrast between Akeem’s happy-go-lucky exuberance and rugged New York City life.
Similar to the first film, director Craig Brewer’s sequel “Coming 2 America” starts off on a beautiful morning in the heavenly paradise that is the palace of Zamunda, a fictional African kingdom. The last time viewers saw Prince Akeem, he was getting married to his true love, Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley) of Queens, New York. Three decades later, it’s now their wedding anniversary and Akeem is crowned king, but every king needs an heir to their throne. Who will rule Zamunda if Akeem only has daughters — who are forbidden to rule? “Coming 2 America” follows the discovery of Akeem’s illegitimate American son, and Akeem’s struggle to make this man from Queens fit into the posh and noble role of a poised African prince.
