The daily beast, the republican party lawmakers are planning to focus their attention on discrediting the whistle-blower, could that be effective? especially considering so much testimony appears to have backed up what the whistle-blower alleged. yeah, and for that reason, i m not sure that s what s going to be the main focus of the strategy. to the extent there s going to be a focus on the whistle-blower, that s because that s what the president wants to be focusing on. i don t know that house republicans believe there s a lot to gain from that. they will try to make adam schiff the focus and discredit him and adam schiff, of course, there s some connection between his staff having a conversation with the whistle-blower and i think that may be a line that they ll take. but what i m really hearing that republicans are thinking about doing is trying to shift a little bit away from these process arguments. i think they believe that the process arguments have been effective, they ve don ....

Democrats cannot ignore the allegations against president trump, despite their concerns that with further divide the country. house dems got a full impeachment list for next week but unclear who will show up. joining us is david gregory and susan glasser, staff writer for the new yorker and jeffrey toobin. a lot to talk about. let me start with you. the line you re hearing from republicans is that this is no due process. it is unconstitutional. it is unfair. it s even fundamentally unamerican according to the white house press secretary. if they press this did nothing wrong with no due process argument, do they have any toehold in reality to push forward? it is important to point out the arguments about no due process are all process arguments. they are not defenses of the president s conduct with regard to ukraine. as for the actual arguments that ....

View with past impeachment inquiries? you know, i don t think that the nixon and clinton impeachments are really great guides for our current situation. if the house had picked up an impeachment inquiry based on the mueller report, i think that the analogy would be more appropriate. but here what you have is essentially an investigation begun from scratch without any kind of independent counselor special prosecutor engaged in the original fact finding mission. and they have tarted this. and now they move into the public phase. you know, the other piece is that the house has the power to conduct this inquiry the way that it wants. and two incidents in the recent past don t constitute the precedent that it s bound to. a federal judge has basically already said that they are engaged in legitimate impeachment inquiry. i think that these process arguments are not going to go ....

KNTV NBC Nightly News With Lester Holt November 1, 2019 09:09:00

So what are the rules? republicans and democrats will have more time for questioning and republicans can call their own witnesses but only with democrats approval. it s a sad day because nobody comes to congress to impeach a president of the united states no one reporter: the vote forced house lawmakers to go on the record, only two democrats crossed party lines to vote against the resolution no republicans defected with the white house privately pleased at that show of support. this impeachment is not only an attempt to undo the last election it is an attempt to influence the next one, as well. we were so hurried to impeach this president, we don t really give a darn about their rules. it s not a fair process it s not an open process it s not a transparent process reporter: democrats dismissing those process arguments saying it s substance that matters. it s about betrayal it s about corruption. it s about national security reporter: the dramatic moment ....

Investigation thus far, because it s all going to come out there. are a number of republicans who want to say to this president don t argue this as a fireside chat because the facts aren t good for you either. yeah, i think when these transcripts are released it s going to be a worst picture for the president. all of the witnesses who have come forward have essentially corroborated the same story, that there was an effort by the president to ask the ukrainians to interfere in the 2020 election, that he withheld american military aid and a white house visit until that happened and that the white house staff, including lawyers of the white house staff sought to cover that up. so the defenders of the president only have three places to go without these process arguments available to them. number one is i guess perhaps they could say well, the facts weren t as described. he never said these things, and it s a misinterpretation the ....
