Forestry product exports expected to reach US$15.5 bilion in 2021

It is forecast that the total export turnover of wood and forestry products for the whole year will reach US$15.5 billion, a year-on-year increase of 17%.

The figure was revealed by Bui Chinh Nghia, Vice General Director of the Vietnam Administration of Forestry (VNFOREST) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, at a conference held on July 7 to review its performance in the first half of the year and set tasks for the second half of 2021.
The export value of wood and forestry products in the first six months of this year was estimated at US$8.71 billion, up 61.6% compared to the same period last year, the conference heard. ....

Indigenous peoples from the Malaysian state of Sarawak on the island of Borneo are hopeful their objections to logging by Samling Group – covering an area of forest roughly equivalent to the size of Luxembourg – are finally being taken seriously after the country’s timber certification board ordered dispute mediation a year after they first complained about the plan.
The Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) took action following complaints by 36 Indigenous Penan, Kenyah and Jamok communities from Sarawak’s Upper Limbang and Baram regions about alleged flaws in its certification of two logging concessions. ....
