Malaysia’s commitment – dating back to the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, to maintain at least 50% of its total land area under forest cover stays true, as currently 55.3% of the country’s land area remains under forest cover.
The country has a total forested area of 18.27 million hectares, of which 10.92 million hectares are Permanent Reserve Forests (PRF) and 3.31 million hectares are totally protected areas. ....

Timber organization’s backing ‘one step’ toward ‘peace park’ in Borneo
In December 2020, the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) endorsed a proposal by the Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) for what’s come to be known as the Baram Peace Park, covering 2,835 square kilometers (1,095 square miles) on the island of Borneo.
Proponents of the park say it will protect wildlife, forest-dependent livelihoods, and the last remaining primary forest in the Malaysian state of Sarawak.
But they also acknowledge that the ITTO’s announcement is only a step toward the park’s designation, and industrial logging continues to threaten the region’s forests. ....

Tennent's And Heinz Make Moves To Reduce Use Of Plastic

C&C’s Tennent’s brand and Heinz have become the latest firms to make a move away from using plastic to hold together multipacks.
Tennent’s is investing £7m in packaging equipment at its Wellpark Brewery which will support its drive to eradicate single-use plastic from consumer packaging.
As part of its ‘Because Life is Bigger than Beer’ initiative, the firm expects to remove 150 tonnes of plastic from Tennent’s Lager can packs by 2022, including more than 100 million plastic (hi- and mid-cone) rings.
When the work at its Wellpark Brewery is completed in the spring, the brewer will be able to produce up to 120,000 cans per hour, packaged in fully recyclable cardboard. ....

Heinz removes plastics from canned product packaging
Heinz is replacing plastic shrink-wrap packaging across its multipack canned products for sustainably certified paperboard, a move which will reduce the company s plastics footprint by 550 tonnes.
A UK-wide roll-out will commence this Autumn
Heinze is switching to a paperboard sleeve for multipack canned products. The new “eco-sleeve” is fully recyclable and is approved by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). The new sleeve also uses 50% less material than a fully enclosed box and 10% less than traditional paperboard sleeves.
Heinz estimates that a rollout across all canned products and major UK retailers will remove 550 tonnes of shrink-wrap packaging. The first products – a selection of Heinz Soups – are available in the new packaging, with a UK-wide launch to commence in Autumn 2021. ....
