"Orchestrating Virtual Network Functions in Wireless Powered IoT Networ" by Honglin Ren, Kwan Wu Chin et al.

Virtualization of devices operating in Internet of Things (IoTs) networks allows them to host functions or tasks from different users; these devices can thus execute multiple on demand sensing and data processing services concurrently. Devices, however, have limited energy and operational lifetime. To this end, this paper considers supporting Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) in a Radio Frequency (RF)-charging network with a Hybrid Access Point (HAP). Our aim is to minimize the energy used by the HAP to power devices in order to support deployed VNFs. It outlines a Mixed-Integer Linear Program (MILP) to jointly optimize VNFs placement, routing and link scheduling, and also the HAP’s charging duration. Further, it proposes a heuristic, called Decoupled Greedy Algorithm (DGA), that first assigns VNFs onto devices with the highest energy level before optimizing the HAP’s charging, routing and link schedule. This research proposes a smart microgrid installation and operation for an island by introducing ship's generators as a backup generator. On a small island, it is challenging to run big loads such as tower cranes and big motors, which are very necessary for the island's industrial development. Besides, photovoltaic (PV) and wind turbine generator (WG) output power output depends on weather conditions. So, the uncertainty of PV generations is a common drawback that is very difficult to tackle. Sometimes, due to a huge drop in renewable generators, the backup generators need to run. Even the backup generator ensures a certain time of resilience for a microgrid during the time of any unexpected moment. The installation of a backup generator involves a lot of costs. Also, to run a fossil fuel-based generator needs fuel transportation costs. Extreme incidents can cause diverse and dynamic disruptions to active distribution networks (ADNs). Thus, ADN operators (DNOs) must plan to prepare for and adapt to changes in conditions to withstand and quickly recover from such disruptions. This paper proposes a cooperative planning framework to design optimal microgrids (MGs) in smart ADNs integrated with virtual power plants (VPPs) to quickly reconfigure and recover during such events. The proposed framework has two parts: 1) optimal partitioning of ADNs with integrated VPPs into supply-sufficient MGs; and 2) the scheduling of the partitioned MGs. Since the VPPs are autonomous, a smart DNO and VPP interface and operating model for dynamic operating envelopes (DOEs) is proposed to quantify and integrate the supply capacity of VPPs in the operation of MGs.
