Hollywood is mourning hip-hop star Biz Markie following the news of his death on Friday.
Markie, born Marcel Theo Hall, died at age 57, his rep confirmed to PEOPLE Friday, though his cause of death has not yet been revealed.
Social media was quickly flooded with tributes to the "Just a Friend" singer, including posts from Questlove, Kirk Franklin, E-40 and more.

A few weeks ago, according to Pitchfork, the news, which was falsely reported, started circulating that the popular rapper, had died, his manager set the record straight.

Biz had been struggling with his health for over a year. In July 2020, he was in a Maryland area hospital receiving treatment related to Type II diabetes. But as the months dragged on, friends of Biz started to worry when they hadn’t heard any updates for six months.
DX was told at the time, “He’s not doing great, but it’s not as scandalous as it felt in the beginning. Short story is Biz is diabetic, he had slipped into a diabetic coma, but that has happened to him in the past and it would only last a little while. He would go to the hospital, get discharged and get his meds under control. This particular time, he had a stroke while he was in the middle of the coma.”

NEW YORK – American rapper, DJ and producer Biz Markie, who shot to fame with his 1989 hit "Just a Friend", died on Friday, aged 57, according to media reports.
In a statement to US media, his representatives said he died with his wife by his side.
"Biz created a legacy of artistry that will forever be celebrated by his industry peers and his beloved fans whose lives he was able to touch through music, spanning over 35 years," representative Jenni Izumi said in the statement.
