MSNBC The Week With Joshua Johnson August 30, 2021 04:04:00

St. john s parish is really a concern right now as we are dealing with five inch per hour rates of rainfall. that is dramatic and it will be monumental flooding across this area. just checking lake pontchartrain new orleans getting a bit of a break but we are seeing that lake rise about four feet just in the last ten hours. that is going to allow the storm surge to really be a problem. wind gusts they are not really an issue across southwest louisiana and even baton rouge getting lucky at this hour but the bulk of the quadrant of the storm system sitting in new orleans. winds have calmed down in the last hour but we are still seeing gusts up to 59 miles per hour. with some isolated wind gusts up to about 80 miles per hour. power is still going to be an issue and i do want to say it is very muggy across this section of the country. people dealing with warm air in ....

We ve already seen a couple of tornadoes and warnings across central mississippi, and i expect that to continue through early morning. the winds that are trying to make their way out of the southeast louisiana, but look how they are starting to flow into central mississippi, jackson, mississippi, throughout the night we re gonna see wind gusts of 60 miles per hour. but some isolated communities have a potentially strong winds. that so the national hurricane center, 85 miles per hour. once this system makes landfall, it slow down dramatically, and that s why it s about to drop just a ton of moisture across the east louisiana, and it sat in the golf for about 24 hours, and really gain some fuel, and that s why the moisture caught that strength. across eight states that will just see tomorrow, and it will ....

This is a tropical system, which means there s tropical moisture that s still in the storm. i just counted. we have 19 flash flood warnings going on right now. i lost count at 14. i just recounted them. 19 different areas in the parishes of louisiana, mississippi and even into alabama with flash flood warnings there. there s the rain right now. it s moving to the north. we still have these tornado watches in effect for these counties and parishes off to the east. the right side of that eye, northeast quadrant of any eye is where tornadoes can be possible because of the storm that s already happening with the storm itself. look how far we go. orange, four to six inches, all the way up into pennsylvania the next couple of days. i put it into motion for you, turning to the northeast as we work our way into later on today. still raining across the gulf coast. still some surge there. one or two feet. ....

MSNBC The Mehdi Hasan Show August 30, 2021 03:04:00

Of cars with sirens a little while ago going through. earlier in the evening, i saw people out, you know, jogging and things like that. but no, for the last few hours, we have not seen anybody except some journalists like us who are out here. and a couple of what looked like official cars going around i guess to assess the damage. there s certainly no repairs for any of that going on. but nobody on the street. pretty much empty. that s good to hear. thank you, ali. we ll check back in with you earlier. let s go to janessa webb. can you talk us through more of what ali is seeing on the ground and what we re seeing from radar in terms of where it s going? yeah, joshua. ali is exactly right. what we re dealing with is the backside of this storm system. but he s also dealing with the front east side quadrant. ....

Still blowing around, it still gusting around. the big problem here is since you and i talked an hour, ago there are more people without, power the count keeps going up. it s obviously not going the other way because no one is fixing anything overnight. we know more than 1 million people in this state without power, the vast majority of them in this city, because of what the electronic, an electrical generation in transmission company says, it s been a catastrophic transmission failure, and had to do with the, load and demand, in this system basically shorted itself out, and showed itself, down they said very clearly this is not going to be fixed tonight, they use the words catastrophic. i don t know whether that means it s easier or harder to fix them power lines going down, but that s where the power is out, here but in the more areas of new orleans we ve seen trees come down, one of the things that s interesting, because you covered a lot of hurricanes before. this is not a case of ....
