San Diego-based Qualcomm, one of the largest microchip manufacturers globally, is scaling back its workforce.
Qualcomm plans to cut 1,258 positions in California due to weak demand for its main product. Over 750 employees being laid off are from Qualcomm's engineering ranks.
The American chip giant had previously reduced its U.S. workforce, particularly in its San Diego headquarters.
Qualcomm had announced company-wide job cuts impacting 5 percent of its staff, including about 20 percent of its employees from the mobile division.
The reports came as Qualcomm struggles to close its purchase of NXP while concurrently meeting its goal to cut costs by $1 billion, reports Fierce Wireless.
