Coming To America arrived via Amazon Prime Video on Friday (March 5) to mixed reviews. Par for the course, some people loved it while others thought it was a film that didn’t need to be made.
But there’s at least one person who was thrilled by
Coming 2 America‘s arrival — Rick Ross. Not only was a portion of the film shot at his sprawling Georgia estate to mimic the fictional city of Zamunda, but he also got to keep some of the lavish decor used in the movie.
As reported by
NBC News, the 45,000 square-foot Fayetteville mansion sits on 235 acres and was previously owned by boxer Evander Holyfield. With 12 bedrooms and a dining room that seats up to 100 people, it had the scale director Craig Brewer and production designer Jeffery Sage had imagined.

There’s plenty of overlap between
Coming 2 America, the sequel to the 1988 comedy of the same name, and
Black Panther — and not just because the former referenced Wakanda early on in the trailer. For one, both films center around the homecoming of American sons, who go to their ancestral (and fictitious) African countries with plans to ascend the throne. And, secondly, they’re outfitted by costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who not only became the first Black woman to win the Oscar for her Afrofuturistic looks in the Ryan Coogler’s Marvel film but, last month, was awarded a Walk of Fame star (she’s only the second costume designer to receive the honor).

Ruth E. Carter Talks About Coming 2 America's Costume Design

After receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame just last week, costume designer Ruth E. Carter has yet another reason to celebrate with the release of
Coming 2 America on Amazon today. Carter, who’s also the first Black woman to win an Oscar in the costume design category for
Black Panther, was brought on to conceptualize the looks worn by the eclectic array of characters that appear in this continuation of Eddie Murphy’s comedy classic from 1988. The sequel is naturally set decades later, and also largely an ocean apart from the original’s primarily State-side location.
“In this film we spend most of our time in Zamunda, so I got an opportunity to tell that side of the story,” says Carter of the new film’s rendering of the fictional African nation and the style of its citizens. The tale she had a hand in weaving is that of Murphy’s King Akeem Joffer, who’s now married to Queen Lisa (Shari Headley) — his romantic interest from the first movie back when he was just a prince and she was just Lisa McDowell.
