Diwali is the Indian festival of lights, one of the holiest days on the calendar for many Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. It’s time when people with family roots in the subcontinent — who in New York City number nearly 600,000 — celebrate the spiritual triumph of good over evil. Diwali will be a holiday for the New York City public school starting next year in 2023, Mayor Eric Adams announced on Thursday.
