Described as a "hardboiled makeover" of Romeo and Juliet, set in Shanghai in the 1920s, Gong wrote her first draft of the book in just a month after returning home on holiday from university in America. Gong was just 19 at the time she wrote These Violent Delights, and says the idea had been floating around in her head for most of the previous year. "In that whole year leading up to it I'd had no time to do anything, I was so focused on my assignments, my classes," she says. "When I had a spare five or 10 minutes I'd just jot down notes of what I was thinking about with the story."
