Potato. peter brown is assistant directer of the quinnipiac university polling institute. nice to see you, peter, thanks for joining us. good afternoon, jenna. jenna: you know, one of the things david axlerod said back in march when health care reform was passed, he said democrats would be able to campaign using health care to their benefit come november. is that the case? well, certainly there s some areas where it ll probably be to their advantage, but the data s pretty clear that more americans disapprove of the health care overhaul than approve of the health care overhaul. the latest quinnipiac poll showed that 51% of registered voters disapprove of the plan, 40% approve of the plan. cbs polls showed roughly the same thing. so that there are places where the health care overhaul is an electoral plus for democrats, but on a net basis. [inaudible] ly, it probably is not. jenna: you know, the focus is so much about the economy and jobs. why is the public view on health care so imp ....

A new poll out today from quinnipiac university finds president obama s approval rating has slipped to its lowest level since his inauguration. this new survey finds 44% approve of his job performance. that s compared to 46% who disapprove. let s bring in peter brown, assistant director of the quinnipiac university polling institute. good day to you. good afternoon, alex. the president got a slight bounce, peter, after the health care victory last month. but his approval now has slipped to a new low for the poll. why is that? well, what we know is that the white house has said that when the president signed the health care bill, that his numbers would improve. and they did slightly in march. but now they re back down again. frankly, he s in fiscally the same position he was in march. the point is he hasn t gotten a bump. the health care bill itself ....

Peter, you conducted this poll. we should note before most folks had heard about the allegations of sexual harassment, but you also say that there were some warning signs about mr. cain s political experience that could make it difficult for him to, quote, close the sale. what do you see in the numbers? well, here s what s important and how it relates to the current questions about what he did at the restaurant association. his calling card is likability. over 60% of voters and 80% of republican voters said they liked him personally before before this broke in the quinnipiac poll, so this is his calling card, and if questions about his personal behavior become center front and center, it threatens to undermine his candidacy. voters have questions about other things. they are not really wild about his 9-9-9 plan, and they have serious qualms about electing someone without government experience. but they like the guy? but they like the guy, and this is the kind of story that co ....
