Aviation department mary shafo, great to have your expertise on this. when you look at how the authorities have been handling this so far, in terms of their interactions with the families what they have and what they have not said as well. do you see this announcement or this comment that it s at the bottom of the ocean, perhaps coming from some sort of data that we haven t yet heard about? i certainly hope so. because to deliver that information to the families and i ve worked with hundreds of families over the years, they hang on every word. and it would have been the most devastating news possible because they all hang on to hope. there are many who will want to hope and expect that their families are in life rafts, that they managed to float in the flotation devices and for them to hear this news from authorities, the authorities must have the information and the airline must have additional information, additional radar coordinates, quite possibly satellite imaging. ....

Black boxes very quickly. they re good at it. so can the french bea, the british can do it the australians can do it. there are many countries that have that capability. the most important thing right now is finding it. you know no beacons, no elt s going off right now apparently. no way to do it except the long search with eyes and with, you know radar coordinates, et cetera. this may sound like a basic question but we know it s a yurp even aircraft so are the black boxes the same? is it all essentially the same? does internationally we all have the similar kind of device? they re all pretty much the same and this being a new aircraft, it will have a lot of what they call perimeters. you know in the olden days you know decades ago, they when they were invented, they recorded maybe five basic things. air speed, position of basic controls and things like that. now if it s got an input, any ....

Astonishing aircraft mystery. so however tragic this case is i would be surprised if we re looking at another mh370. i think that s where the similarity would probably start. mh370 was such a unique situation we re likely to find out what happened much sooner with this one. right. because there was things going on in the cockpit of mh370 that no one could make sense of. not the case here from what we know of 8501. and as you just said they do have the last radar coordinates. is that correct? yeah. they requested to change course and they have the last known coordinates of the aircraft before they exited air traffic control. ....

But at this point with no contact, they need to be searching for any clues and sadly they need to be looking for wreckage at this point because that s going be very important. the most helpful thing that many nations could do is to contribute their radar. if they instead of wasting time searching vast amount of seas and listening for pingers what they have to do is pinpoint in all the possible radar coordinates so they can go right to the area. that s going to be important because i heard other commentators talk about the positive a water landing. that s difficult and unlikely, but if there s any hope they got to get there and get there quickly. all right. mary schiavo, thank you so much. we appreciate it. you bring up a good point coordination of many countries around the world, their abilities to work with those airlines to find and track via radar where that plane might have last been spotted and been seen. so, mary thank you very much. ....

Pinger locaters. is that something search and rescue would use at this time? are we talking about purely at this early stage, less than 24 hours after the plane disappeared, are we talking about mainly a visual search? they re mainly doing a visual search of course hopefully aided by a tremendous amount of data from nations who will i hope freely share their radar tracking information. that was one of the biggest problems on 370 in that the radar information that the malaysia government had wasn t shared for four days and they wasted four days looking in the wrong part for the plane, so with good radar coordinates, they should be able to pinpoint in the last radar target hits for this plane, so they ll be doing a visual search get the debris field, if any then use current charts and algorithms to trace back where it would have entered the water if they find the debris field. so to you, david, given the fact we know that this plane disappeared at 7:24 a.m. local time how big, roughl ....
