Anthony fauci, dr. Robered redfield and other members of the White House Coronavirus task force. Theyre expected to update lawmakers on the federal response to the pandemic. Live coverage here on cspan 3. Senator ted kennedy used to say our committee had the broadest jurisdiction in the senate. You only have to look around the room at a hearing and see that we also have the broadest range of views in the senate and some of the ablest advocates of those views. But thanks to our Committee Members and to senator murray most of our hearings have been bipartisan which means weve agreed on a broad range of witnesses to present points o ....

Chairman shelby and his staff for letting us try this and see how this kind of information gathering works for appropriators. Its not a markup. There will be no voting today, but were going to get some really important information. Yesterday, the new coronavirus cases passed 50,000 for the first time, making it a single day record. This morning, 128,000 americans have died and nearly 2. 7 million have tested positive for covid19. Of course, the thoughts of myself and everyone on this committee are with those individuals and those families whove been affected. I called this hearing really to look at an update on the efforts that the administrations put together and, frankly members of this committee were very involved in to see if we couldnt establish a new way to look at responding to pandemics. I think we have the chance to actually write a new important chapter in what that response looks like. Developing the right vaccine, the right therapeutics, the right testing is important. And ....

Senator blunt the appropriation subcommittee on labor, health and Human Services, education and related agencies will come together. Im glad to be here this morning with my colleagues, some offices or from some other location. This is the first appropriations hearing being held in person and virtually and want to thank chairman shelby and his staff for letting us try this and see how this kind of information gathering works for appropriators. We are going to move on to our second panel. I am very excited for this actually. I have my good friend, janet woodcock, who is the principal fda commissioner and has been there for a number of years and helped reorganize and restructure offices. And is probably one of the best investors i know in the public and private sector. She has always been willing to do the hard work that others are unwilling to do and make hard decisions. And continuing our brain traps, we have dr. Mark mcclellan who ran two federal agencies including serving as the fda commissioner area i am an eternal pragmatist so this is fun for me because you are going to spend time talking about how to fix agencies and organizations. During the pandemic, the biomedical innovation complex works pretty well. We got vaccines, had therapeutics, and it took time to happen and in record time. All of us are probably sitting here today because these things actually happened. We got them out community. The

We are going to move on to our second panel. Very excited. My good friend has been at the fda for a number of years to reach structure offices and one of the private sector whos been willing to do the hard work of others are unwilling to do and continuing, we have doctor mark who ran to federal agencies including serving as fda commissioner so we are going to spend time talking about organizations. We eventually got them out into the community. The Public Health infrastructure unfortunately operated largely inh un a silo, fragmented across localities, states, and the fed. And then as we think about agencies come with three primary agencies. We had the cdc, the fda and the nih, and they all functions very differently duringda the pandem. And so my hope was to spend sometime talk about how the fdas successes, it was not perfect but it did a pretty darn good job, and what we can learn from that thinking about how to fix this cdc and t ....
