Valley Voice: Here's to no longer living in the 'New Normal'


WELCOME TO OUR first anniversary month of the "New Normal."
It was in mid-March of last year when the world as we knew it changed after Gov. Chris Sununu imposed his Stay-at-Home emergency orders due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
I recall interviewing Conway Village Fire Chief Steve Solomon and asking about precautions. When he mentioned PPE, I had to ask what those now all-too-familiar letters stood for: Personal Protection Equipment, something I didn’t have a clue about but which, like everyone, I now am familiar with, along with wearing a mask in public as a requirement of daily life for most of us who recognize the perils of this deadly virus (outside of those naysayers who choose to believe in political ideology rather than science, putting the rest of us in jeopardy, but I digress).

Businesses report robust February vacation weeks


CONWAY — Despite limited ski area ticket sales and restrictions on restaurant seating due to the pandemic, Mount Washington Valley businesses still described the two February vacation weeks (President's Day vacation week, followed by New Hampshire vacation week) as busy with increased traffic, sales and bookings. The fact that regular snow falls kept local areas with great conditions for skiers and riders certainly didn't hurt.
Last year at this time, nervousness about the brand-new coronavirus was just beginning to flare. Yet the February vacation weeks were still strong.
Fast forward to 2021. Lodging members of the chamber weighed into the survey with mostly positive comments. In fact, Christopher Bellis, co-owner of the Cranmore Inn in North Conway, was featured in a story on WMUR-Channel 9 about what a strong vacation week the valley had.

The Snow Report: Snow trains and great skiing this weekend


CONWAY — February vacation weeks roll along, with the first about to end and the second one starting.
Machine groomed and loose granular conditions (with fresh powder from Friday’s flurries) and almost everything open makes for great skiing and riding this weekend, featuring snow showers today and sunny skies and freezing temps Sunday. Remember to book reservations at your favorite area online.
The Conway Scenic Railroad (conwayscenic.com) is also offering snow trains to Bartlett daily.

December 20, 2020NORTH CONWAY — Winter is gearing up in Mt. Washington Valley as ski resorts and XC Centers open, ice forms, and backcountry hiking and skiing plans get underway. The recent snowfall really put the icing on the cake with up to inches of new snow.
The White Mountains surrounding the Valley offer seemingly endless recreational opportunities within an easy drive for much of the East Coast. This winter will be unlike others, however, as the pandemic is still in place. It'll be more important than ever to "know before you go" to the Valley as Covid restrictions include mandatory reservations at some ski resorts, social distancing and mask wearing by all, plus limited access in some cases. Be sure to have a plan and complete gear for your winter adventure before you come, and that starts with checking the place you plan to play. The Granite State Safe campaign helps educate those visiting New Hampshire this year with the basic tenants of travel to the region, yet all visitors should take their planning a step further by contacting the business(es) they plan to visit and checking their safety protocols so each person coming to the Valley will be fully prepared.
