Interview: Michelle Elkin on Choreographing FOOTLOOSE: The Musical at Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center

Michelle Elkin made her professional debut at the age of 8 in the movie musical Annie. Since then, her resume includes working in numerous film, television, commercial, and theater projects as a dancer and choreographer. After recently choreographing the teen musical 13 at Simi Valley Cultural Center, Michelle is returning to the venue as co-director (with Barry Pearl) and choreographer of Footloose: The Musical with book by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie, music by Tom Snow and lyrics by Dean Pitchford and Kenny Loggins, running April 22 – May 14, 2023. I decided to speak with her since about the production as well as some of the iconic shows on which she has previously worked.

South Bend's Art 4 'meet(s) the moment' with online production of timely 'Ragtime' | Arts

Based on the 1975 E.L. Doctorow novel of the same name, the 1996 musical “Ragtime” takes place in and around New York City during the first two decades or so of the 20th century.
And yet so many of the issues it explores — women’s rights, racial justice, immigration and labor rights — remain potent, divisive concerns in 2021.
Which is why Art 4 decided to produce “Ragtime” now as a virtual work while live performances remain problematic and controversial more than a year into the coronavirus pandemic.
“COVID-19 was like this microscope that really highlighted a lot of existing issues that we face as Americans, some more than others,” Art 4 Artistic Director Mark Albin says. “We wanted to meet the moment. … It’s really a tragedy that we haven’t been able to progress further as a society and that we’re continuing to have exhausting conversations.”
