Up to 9000 travellers at an Indonesian airport may have been tested for COVID-19 with a used nasal swab in a scam that resulted in the arrests of several pharmaceutical staff. 
State-owned pharmaceutical company Kimia Farma is now facing a potential lawsuit following the nose swab scam, which saw employees allegedly wash used nose swabs and resell them, according to local news outlet Detik. 
Local authorities say they believe the scam may have been operating since last December at the Kualanamu airport in Medan, North Sumatra.  ....

Passengers in Indonesia are required to have a negative COVID-19 test result before boarding a flight, and many of them prefer to have the test in the airport to save some time. However, authorities found that several employees of Kimia Farma, which was offering the rapid tests at Kualanamu airport in Medan, North Sumatra, were allegedly washing, repacking and reselling used cotton swabs, reported South China Morning Post (SCMP). ....

A pair of Indonesian lawyers are planning to sue a state-owned pharmaceutical firm after it was discovered to have allegedly reused nasal swabs for coronavirus tests for thousands of people.
Last week, police arrested five workers at Kimia Farma, including its Medan business manager, who were accused of washing and repacking cotton swabs at the company s main office in the city, and then sending them to Kualanamu International Airport where they were used on unsuspecting travellers. ....

Authorities are investigating whether anyone was infected with the virus as a result of the contaminated swabs.
Five Indonesian lab workers were arrested last week and accused of reusing nasal swabs in rapid antigen COVID-19 tests, Richard C. Paddock and Dera Menra Sijabat reported for The New York Times.
The workers are accused of using new swabs to test someone, then washing, repackaging, and using those same swabs to test others, per The Times. The lab workers worked for state-owned pharmaceutical company Kimia Farma at an airport testing site in the city of Medan. ....
