Prior to Tuesday night’s Cherokee County Board of Commissioners meeting, county officials took some time to recognize retiring Commissioner Ray Gunnin in a special ceremony. After thanking everyone for coming out to honor Gunnin, Fire Chief Tim Prather said that, when thinking about Gunnin and his career, he kept coming back to the description of a lifelong community servant for Cherokee County. For more than 40 years, Ray Gunnin has been serving the citizens of Cherokee County in one capacity or another. As he prepares to retire this week following his second term on the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners, Gunnin took some time recently to reflect on his four-plus decades of service. Gunnin’s career in public service began at the age of 18, when he joined the Little River Volunteer Fire Department.
