Chocobo feel now hey before that the New Orleans RB hero Lloyd Brice 1953 outselling frog legs. Horn player Charlie Gabriel's roots are in New Orleans traditional jazz but he made a name for himself playing with Lionel Hampton in a recent Franklin. You . Think. Charlie learned how to play saxophone and clarinet from his father he grew up in the Crescent City playing in local bands at age 11 as a teen his family moved to Detroit where he lived for almost 60 years before returning home to New Orleans to play with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and I went to France for a greeter Franklin back in 1000 thinks the night and I got out the bandstand I guy walked the Andes that could be see you from your wall and I say not one not from the last man I think I'm from Detroit and I wouldn't deny no longer now but I felt I have been in Detroit since 48 and yes 1990 I'm a reader Franklin big band week and it got very angry and shook his head at mean you think you from the wall and because it's in your music. I didn't want you to get Nantucket. We hit old ingredient down here to ne This means that we hit all to diffuse nationalities for the new Long was one of the largest sea post in the country and I owned a slave there but it came from pneumonia that's why it's to see if the gumball stayed in the drum but every bad all of them different cultures if there's a new wall and now as I mentioned before that recalled American music. What is it that led your family and you to leave you know when you were 14 and go to Detroit you know on my mind my younger brothers and sister who had just saddled again my mother about as I shall and one can cut to California for a better life a lot of the lot of the world's people went there and they were looking for a better life style can get out of the surrogate now that the Sergey I get time well might buy them then young in a earner trying to just Sajid take the long route you know go to church Chicago and audit a young people trying to train 24 years old but when you got to Detroit or broke down. So he had her at the go to work the fixed automobile and no longer gone on to get about $900.00 father won so what did it help Oregon in a factory could they would edit out a tank the new pinball the defense network and had my mother come to Detroit with my father and told my mother say y'all can go to trouble you can take Chelsea that you can stay here can I'm teaching you what was he teaching you to shoot you can He would teach you teach me how many you teaching me theory I get so angry with him too but it can turn dad to make a good musician all over to be bringing me back to New Rock. And say boy you know what behind the ear but I realized what he meant by that the musician in your own very very special recession. Did it if they was so much she only. I mean you start with traditional jazz you work your way through bebop through big band soul if you work your way around the world with all kinds of music you know I mean you're showing in stuff from your entire life here is things that I have learned over a period of time playing with different position a piece I'm hearing a piece from am but man I get the play my solo I play what I have as spirits and life is like. Oh it is about a paint brush in his hand which a cambered and something new going south in the pink in a pitcher. Live How was it being a singer versus you know playing the instrument you know you seem to smile to love your way oh you're going to burn it and you know I got that same one time. Allison . Jeremy. In fact he helped arrange the monstrous. You could hear him basically. Behind a piano there which did in those days there's not a lot of guitars soloing going on in the late forty's early fifty's Alyson early rock n roll r. And b. Records from that period. A lot of piano solos not many guitars solos. Because the guitar originally you know was not amplified and people had not quite developed its potential as a solo instrument it was only began being used. In the early forty's thanks largely to the work of Charlie Christian who amplified the guitar so it could fit in with a big band and played with any good. Anyway we did hear from him at the end you could hear him over the piano solo. Nelson. His brother Prince also died from a drug overdose in his twenty's then we went to. A guy who took his 1st. Guitar lessons from Walter Nelson and learn piano from Professor Longhair Dr John doing the Nauruan standard associated. For many years now with James Booker called Jungle partner and that was from his original. Dr John's Gumbel on the Atlantic label we took this from the reissue. Kind of a collection of Dr John's 1st 30 years of good stuff and on that recording also we're a couple of cousins. Of. Uncle. And a prince. Of trumpet black. The brothers Melvin and David Lastly who played respectively cornet and tenor saxophone on that and because they are related they are cousins of Travis Hills uncles they are somehow cousins of him too and that's about as far as I went was trying to place the Andrews Nelson Hale family there in New Orleans music. They're not the only family like that of course you've heard of the Marsalis family and quite possibly of the barber and family. And they're all related there. Is like you know. It's a it's a great thing it holds the communities together you know aside from the churches and the schools and the bands you know things are very much based around family. Ok we did then. Slightly since we just played Dr John we played one of Dr John's tunes as done by b.b. King and Bonnie Raitt from the soundtrack of a crummy movie called Air America. On the m.c.a. Label they did right place wrong time and then b.b. King and Koko Taylor did another New Orleans tune Something you got from the album blues and Ca and for the most of the rest of the show is going to be b.b. King we're going to respect the rules and hair and in the. Copyright confessors here and only play for. Featuring b.b. King but they're going to be along ones alone Anyway everything is going to feature b.b. King but most of them are going to be with other people and we're going to start with a track. Guy who's not afraid to make. Lady Gaga animated duet blues album with a bunch of different people called Playing with my friends Tony Bennett and b.b. King and the good times roll. I Bobby had already said that. A little bit. Until I get my throat together here. I think I am. Thank. Some people say that they kind of lose when you play in the can that we get in now almost like blue. And I don't think so I just think to tell it like it is. So I want to talk to you for just a minute well this play a little bit. My balls mom told me a while ago I won top of the was all right you know very very. Bank in my land is Ok. So what I wanna wear. A good. Life Plan that. You think. Some people am. After is not a band with time and. I really don't want to get rid of them. Just one nearest cup. Want to give a little one to the fellows. That happened to you and I for one thing they're. Going over some of this. Is that. Somebody else. Like they might relate it. To the door. Down you need. All you need. And when you look up. Look up in a position. And you. Trying to figure out what just happened. And again it just. Gets built like the plan you said. They get. Behind me and. You know that. There are. You know they are really mad at me anyway. You know what they say. You know so you take. A look. That and got on much longer as 2 guys b.b. King and Bobby Blue Bland could've just. All night in the probably did on occasion . We kind of played New Orleans material around trumpet black and his family. Straight up tribute to b.b. King. You know as you well know just a few days back we began. With. Something you got which is in New Orleans. And we had it done by b.b. King and. Taylor from the blues summit on m.c.a. Followed that with I'm sorry. B.b. King and Bobby Blue Bland from their album together for the 1st time the gun hole label to lose so much for a b. And a James there is something on your mind then he himself from completely well on blues way and a. Combination junior says a medley is a 2 song medley they just run right into each other on the LP Crying won't help you and your me then we all came back to b.b. King and Bobby Blue Bland for a real medley for must have been a dozen tunes in their. Programmers 9 fixing music and we'll be back with you in just a moment. It . Goes further. With the state. What. My. Son. I'm. Going. To tell you. That. They're one of the highlights of this year's live music festival or Khan and the vocalist Jose Pito Gomez and that track was called. Final release and that was on the daft own label from orchestral con part of that we heard from Joe Wilson and his orchestra this goes back either late fifty's early sixty's their version of Viva Toronto the group Del Chicano had a hit with that but Joe Wilson actually wrote it and did it originally and this is from the complete Pacific jazz recordings of Gerald Wilson and his orchestra and again Viva Toronto we began with Sergio Monroy from Spain Spain and from his cd which is just call Monroy I played a track called one doe de good jazz and again nice thing nice piano flamenco work from Sergio Monroy Well I want to go ahead and continue now I want to play something from a trio of piano players this cd came out about 4 years ago it's called plain Leko not if you're not familiar with. Ernesto Lekota they refer to him as the Cuban Gershwin written some really really fine songs probably some that you'd recognize Well definitely some he wrote Mali Gania wrote on the loose Sia and many many more and I want to play a track from the cd which features Chito Valdes gone Zoller Rubel Kaba Michel Camillo I saw the 3 of them in s.f. Jazz a couple years ago they played singly they played as duos and they played all 3 together and it was I would say spectacular So this is their version of Lecco nose under Lucy. Than. The. Man where I've been. Born. Or where ne'er Blair I am I am. I am the I Am the money. I I am. I That track is called Sendero on this from the soundtrack of the motion picture picture of the Motorcycle Diaries that has to do I saw that movie twice I don't hardly see anything once but that's a really fine movie has to do it the Che Guevara and but the soundtrack is written by Gustavo Santo ly he's an Argentinian composer also a movie producer he's done the music for several movies including Brokeback Mountain Babel Motorcycle Diaries the book a life and a bunch more again from Argentina really really fine composer before that we heard from Omar Sosa and Sekou and this is from c d called transparent water and from that see the play the cut called Dari and features Omar Sosa he's playing various keyboards doing the vocals also Sekou cater who's plays the kora and also does some vocals on that cd that began with a recording called plainly. Like a mention there Nestor Leko no known as a Cuban Gershwin and from this I played under Lucy there are 3 piano players on here to chill Valdes gone Zollo Rubel Kaba and Michel Camillo on that track that I played it just featured Gonzalo Rubel Cobb on piano along with Raimundo Ahmed or on the Spanish guitar and lean Cortez playing the hone. Well let's see we've got just about 25 minutes before midnight come up at midnight we have some overnight jazz for you I want to play several more tracks yet we have time want to play something now from Los Hombres Cali and this group from New Orleans and they kind of combine some traditional New Orleans music with some Latin music when you play a track called James Booker Gene Booker famous New Orleans piano player in the same vein as Dr John. Mit Professor Longhair several others and again this is low so embarrassed Caliendo s. And a track called James Booker. We News. Was done. This month was the sun then said it got. son moved on the. Long long. Long long run. Because you. That's a great group actually from Cuba though Sufi erosive been around for many years they do a lot of Spanish language doo wop and that too was called Put to get van from Los a fear of The Sapphires We also heard from Los Lobos just another band from East l.a. And we listen to them do sob or me I'm trying to think of what to say on the dedication on that but I guess I can't say anything on the air. And then we began with. The end this from their cd called Volume 5 Carneval and their version of a tune called James Booker and this version of Los on. And welcome back to coast to coast George dory with you Dr Joan Rosenberg with us a renowned psychologist Professor consultant corporate trainer and creator of the emotional mastery training and author of the groundbreaking new book I just mentioned 90 seconds to a life you love in the bestselling book ease your anxiety she's appeared in several documentary films has appeared on numerous television and radio shows including the own network c.n.n. Samaritan morning a.b.c. C.b.s. Fox p.b.s. 2 time Texas talk speaker and speaks across the country about these issues you will hear tonight Dr John welcome to the program thank you so much is a pleasure for me to be here and honor I can't think of a better time to have you on you were scheduled of course some time ago but this tragic episode I want to ask you just a few questions about that before we move into your work 90 seconds to a life you love what is wrong with people these days Joan I mean we have a 21 year old 24 year old shooting 20 people 9 people what's wrong with them you know I think I was trying to John a couple notes about that the people who get desperate. And most of the time this comes response like that comes from deep on resolved pain or and or unresolved feelings and so it it does it in exactly with what we're talking about tonight and many of the people that and I don't know the histories of the people that did the last 2 shootings but often times people like this in their desperation come from upbringings where they have been belittled often. That they were they've been isolated and I felt like they were poor. I is are outcasts within the in groups of the communities they belong with so and many times they've grown up in situations that were chaotic and unstable so it's they're not coming from a typically from a stable place and and then they get desperate and rather than talking about what takes place for them or what's going on for them they end up acting it out is are always that moment that really kicks this into high gear where they just snap and then do what they do you know I don't I doubt I don't know the answer to that because certainly we if we look back at the history of these kinds of shootings there was quite a bit of planning that was involved so there's there's something has to be stoking the fire along the way before they make that decision to finally after on something and it could be that something triggered metaphorically triggers them and then that's the point at which they go right now I'm going to go do what I've been planning to do. Go ahead it is ironic that we would have these 2 mass shootings back to back I'm wondering if you even though one person they were both probably getting ready for it you have one triggered literally the other it's possible it's quite possible that one we watching somebody do one gave this the 2nd one the courage to go well that one can do it I can follow through to and then want to and then that person went ahead and did it you know the other interesting thing here to George is that there's something known as a suicide by cop. And he may have talked about that kind of phenomenon before bit but lots of times what will end up happening when people go out and engage in mass shootings like this is that they're they're feeling suicidal themselves. Why don't they just take themselves out instead of everybody else with them and well it's harder for them to do it on their own and they either there's some last blaze of glory that they think that they can experience but they won't be responsible for then taking their own life they'll put themselves in harm's way so that someone hurts them when Dr John Rosenberg John and John your personal story inspired you to write this book 90 seconds to life you love what happened. I started school at a very young age of 4 and and actually I did experience some of what it kind of leaves in I did experience quite a bit of teasing and being bullied as I went through school I was the youngest and smallest in my class and to top it off I was exquisitely shy so I felt totally different felt like a didn't belong didn't fit in and I would look over and see my peers and they were laughing they looked like they belong with each other and they had this sense of confidence that I which is was not my experience at all so I wanted what I thought they had so that that was that was kind of a starting point for me and I understand you're a u.s. Air Force veteran So thank you for serving her so welcome Yes I am I have spent 10 years in the service got you beat me by one I had 9 in the Navy. Has 3 active duty 7 reserve What made you become a psychologist I was always a good listener and it was easy for me to connect with my own as I got older to connect with my own peers and also to sit down and converse with adults and I was curious a love people and it was it became a natural fit I actually started out wanting to be an Outward Bound instructor if you're familiar with the outward bound. Using nature is a medium for personal growth one side. Gun into school and into college in the program that I was in which which was in counseling it became a natural fit for me and I just stayed Tell me about the title 90 seconds to a life you love. The 90 seconds is the approach for people to be able to handle their unpleasant feelings and the key there is that it's what I want people to come away with is understanding that to be able to experience and move through these unpleasant feelings or these difficult feelings means being able to ride short lived Bali's and sation waves which I'm happy to explain more Sure so the key here is that most of us experience emotional feelings as a bodily sensation 1st. Saw you made like anxiety lay feel like they're having a heart attack or something like that or a heart attack or they get butterflies in their stomach or think embarrassment and you have heat kind of running up your chest or into your face or maybe sadness like a drop down feeling in the middle of your chest and end with that's how we actually know what we're feeling emotionally and as I got into my professional life the 2nd big question I was wrestling with was what is it that made it so hard for people to deal with these unpleasant feelings and it dawned on me that it wasn't that people didn't want to feel the full range of what they felt they didn't want to feel the bodily sensation that helps them know what they were feeling so the goal for me was to then find a way to help people tolerate that and the key here again is just understanding that that the 1st thing to understand is that you come to know what you're feeling emotionally typically to a bodily sensation so the key is you want to stay aware of that sensation and move towards it and then the 2nd part is that that is actually. Short lived most feelings when they fire off don't last much more than an upper range of about 90 seconds and when you say difficult feelings give us some examples of one of the difficult feelings people might have to it sure I had to end the book I talk about 8 and my thinking around this is that if people can be able to experience and move through these a comfortably anough because then they can actually start to pursue whatever they want in life in the aid of our sadness shame hopelessness anger vulnerability embarrassment disappointment and frustration. And really they're all different in that some are easier to handle than others they might be the actually I my view on that is the people who some people are better at it and language I would call the angry end of the continuum like anger and frustration and other people are better at handling the sad and disappointed or more vulnerable kind of feelings so that So I think it differs if we were to if you want to I want to get into a discussion of that you might find it easier to handle certain feelings and I might find it easier to handle others sure but it's different it differs for each person well I know there are you know some people for example when they have one of the say 8 rather than face it they try to run away from it and you know the difference different aspects of these 8 possibilities you handle in different ways but is there a general way to tackle all of it at one time. Yeah well that the key again is the 1st is to stay aware of what you're going through so I want people to you to be able to to be aware as opposed to avoid to move towards the pain or the unpleasantness and to then if they can do that by again tolerating the body's bodily sensation is literally is like writing writing waves within your body like walking along the the ocean shoreline what you know the waves coming in and in out it's the same is true for feelings kind of that we experience in our body that it would be it would be allowing us to just ride those waves and stay present to what's going on and then if they can to take a few moments to think about what triggers a feeling John you've created what you called the Rosenberg reset formula what is that right so that I call this the formula is one choice 8 feelings 90 seconds. So we what we've already kind of begun to touch on in one joist is choosing into awareness as opposed to avoidance and we know lots of people that will choose to be distracted through alcohol or drugs or social media or shopping or I mean I think I have a list of 35 of these but so that so that again I don't want people to move towards the avoidance I want them to stay aware the 8 feelings I've just named and again why these 8 because they're the most common spontaneous everyday feeling reactions or feeling out comes on to things not turning out the way people want or the way people need and do you know all humans go through this whether you're an infant or an adult yes but when we're an infant we just don't have the language for it and as we're when we were toddlers or young children we may not be so articulate either and then we may have a hard time actually we tantrum instead of using the words to actually help us manage the feelings lots of people these days are going through some tense times incredible amounts of anxiety gosh prescription pills are coming out in a record number yes it would you know we've got a guest Dr Peter Breggin who's a psychiatry wrist and he's written a book called medication madness he thinks that stuff is horrible for people but can people solve their ills without drugs oh my goodness yes yes and fact I think a lot of the depression that we see and a lot of I actually call in this is that I think of is actually soulful Depression people may have clinical depression but I think that people go through what I call soulful depression which is really them disconnecting from themselves they're trying not to think about and they're trying not to feel what it is that they're. Actually think about it in feel and so they when they disconnect from themselves I think it leads down a path of anxiety and eventually to what I call the soulful depression so yeah that can totally be taken care of by reconnecting to yourself and and through talk more with Dr John Rosenberg is my impression correct Joan that lots of people are feeling up tight in angry these days much more than Gosh I can remember. I would say yes I would agree I would agree with you I think that I think that people are confused I think people feel helpless I think there is yes I think they actually feel given shootings like this they actually feel more vulnerable that they could get hurt and I think that yes it's actually literally creating a more anxious time there's a lot of a lot of divisiveness and and as you know it just it just makes it makes people feel very unsafe to feel unsafe they feel more vulnerable and then they then they're not quite sure what to do are there some people who can naturally handle these 8 difficult feelings you know on their own and they've done it naturally without any assistance or help. Yes I mean if if a child grew up in a family were the family encouraged the child the children to speak up to speak and to talk about what they were feeling as opposed to being told to shut up or that they weren't what it was that they were feeling or or they weren't yelled at in when they were feeling something then then yes what they've started do is they learn how to kind of manage their own emotional state far more effectively and and then can learn how to do that on their own Tell me why you think Road rage is. An epidemic stage and why does that happen and why do people road rage. Against same I would go back to actually are beginning part of our conversation I think the road road rage is displaced rage shuras so that so that it's not it me normally if somebody cut you off you go all right and I was cut off you know that was irritating and you'd move on but when when it escalates. The. Cutting off serves as something to trigger somebody was getting stirred up is older stuff so I. Didn't even run my theory of road rage isn't and you're touching on it is that inconsiderate or poor driver does this to somebody who's have been a really bad day. And that person can handle them right right and again where I would go in addition to that some in agreement but is that they have got they have other stuff going on that they haven't dealt with and then and then it out in a situation like it festers doesn't absolutely I mean and enter in rather than just like you said go oh my gosh a guy almost hit me and then you move on instead Nowadays they chase you or something like that right right right and again I would put it right back to under is all feelings and things that have not been dealt with it and then it just gets dumped on the next thing that triggers you what's happening in society Joan to create this what I will call an epidemic of emotionally upset people. You know I there's I think there's a lot of big things that go into that that's a very complex question the I actually think the breakdown of our family and community has contributed and I think that when we when we don't have a sense that they were well taken care of that the the again that the family environment feels unsafe or. Where that wouldn't normally be there to protect us and catch us when that's not there or I think things start falling through the cracks for people and they grow up less secure and less connected to other people we can look at social media and we can look at the flourishing of technology and people are more related to things. And to the social media to something kind of . Serial. There's none of this not a face to face heart to heart connection and when we lose those Fons of connection then we start I think we start collapsing what about the political climate where you know everyone is attacking everyone there doesn't seem to be any sensitivity towards towards anything in it just seems to be really on a control and I think it's really stressful for a lot of people. I wholeheartedly agree with you again if I look at what I try to do when I'm consulting with somebody or consulting with a group it's the 1st thing I attempt to do is to foster a sense of safety. And that's not what's being fostered at least in the United States Muslim much less worldwide No not at all Stay with us Dr John Rosenberg with us we're going to take a quick break her book is called 90 seconds to a life you love next hour with her we'll take phone calls perhaps you can share a story or 2 about how you've been able to cope through some of this too so we'll be back in a moment on coast to coast am the coast website is now streamlined for mobile devices great news if you're a coast insider or simply want to enjoy our website on your phone visit coast to coast am dot com on your i Phone or Android browser. And welcome back Dr Joan Rosenberg with us or web site linked up at coast to coast am dot com It's her name her latest book 90 seconds to life you love Joan how did people combat this now they're constantly being bombarded with things how do they fight that off. You mean which part of the like all these difficult feelings I mean they're constant They are confident that the again the part of it is just understanding that they're a natural part of our everyday life and then what we as a we talked about earlier when they try to shut down on those feelings they actually cut off from themselves and it leads it leads to kind of a depressed feeling or a more anxious feeling in you and and part of that then is understanding that the 1st step to being confident in being able to feel more capable in the world is to be able to have the ability to make your way through these unpleasant feelings and so that that's the 1st the other is to start to develop attitudes and beliefs that help you be more resilient. And one of those has to do with being actually being able to ask for help to understand that when we go through life it's not that we're in life to to just be totally independent. We're actually in life to be both kind of to lean on others and to do things by ourselves so if we can start to acknowledge the needs and limitations that we have and then and begin to turn to other people to ask for the help that we genuinely need then that can make a big difference as well of these 8 difficult feelings is there one that stands out more than the other or they all balanced. And well I think that I think that historically I think what we see and again you'll bear with me and terms of stereotyping momentarily but we see men be more comfortable with anger and frustration and we see women or I see women typically be more comfortable with sadness or embarrassment or shame and not that anybody wants to be experiencing any of those but but it's easier for women to to express those feelings as opposed to express anger and I think it's easier for men to express anger than to deal with the disappointment and the sadness they might actually be feeling to have a friend who passed away something months ago but you know he was an executive but he also was a part time ring announcer and boxing matches that's what he liked and he would get hit with some bolts of anxiety in the middle of the ring where he had to get out of the ring him he couldn't he couldn't stand it anymore what the heck caused that that's and that's interesting I you know again part of it for me would be what's he doing with some of his other feelings I think of ngs i.e.d. Often as the. It's a distraction for the 8 unpleasant feelings. So I will watch people experience anxiety and panic in part because they're not dealing with what's really going on so in his case I you know I again I don't know what the other things going on in life in his life were but but he obviously felt terribly vulnerable when he was in that ring and and maybe thought maybe he was worried about the kind of job he was doing and is putting more focus on what other people were thinking and he's out there all alone and are looking at him and everything else right right and wondering whether he's going to perform well as soon as we start looking outside of ourselves we start to feel more anxious it's what I call. And I want people to think from the inside out so that what they're focused on is what's important to me and and how do I want to perform or how do I want to be in a given situation as opposed to getting so caught up in worrying about what other people think of you so that the so one and one of the things is again is that they devoted to that they're vulnerable it's a dead to exile he's a distraction from the pleasant feelings and when people get caught up in the worry about what others think they are they just lose their center and they feel more anxious right away what is the disguised grief What's that all about and that's a very interesting question disguised grief think of disguised grief as unresolved trauma or you can also think is disguised grief as a gap. Between what you needed what you wanted what you dreamed of and what really occurred. And and I often hear people when they when they use words like bitterness or blame or they hold grudges or they're resentful in my mind those are brief signal words those are telling those words are telling me that there's stuff going on that people aren't dealing with and so I call that disguised grief. Why is developing confidence important you know what we live a more fully expressed in a much happier life when we have that confidence George is it we we feel like we can go out into the world and and be capable in it and we can go pursue the things that are important to us and when we don't have that confidence when we don't have that deep sense that we can handle the emotional an outcome of whatever we want to pursue We just don't do as well in life we don't we're not it's it's we lose a sense of inner peace we feel more anxious we are less happy so when a person feels confidence they actually carry that an experience of that inner peace they start to feel comfortable in their own skin it makes a huge difference in terms of how people approach life well and sometimes you can tell when people walk into a room if they exude confidence or not I mean they just have it or they don't. True the beauty of it is that it can be developed so I wouldn't written a book if I didn't think I would be learned so it's if I see it as something that somebody can learn and that it to me is that it just opens opens the door for so many people to learn confidence what do they need to do for themselves generally Well you know it's interesting I people is paradoxical it's a little it's a little bit backwards from what most people think it is again the 1st thing that I want people to be able to do is to be able to experience and move through those 8 on pleasant feelings I think that's the base of confidence or the foundation of confidence but the 2nd thing that they need to do is that they need to be able to speak up and to be able to to be able to say the things that they want to say is that being assertive it's been totally being assertive Yes and again but my I put a caviar here I want people to be positive kind and well intentioned So it's not that they start speaking up and they trash people but instead they speak up and it's with good intention not ill intention and what's interesting here is that we generally if generally we think that we have to be confident and then we speak but the truth is it's as we speak or through speaking we develop confidence not the other way around so that the foundation pieces is experiencing moving through through proving through those a feelings the 2nd piece is being able to speak up with these and then the 3rd piece in terms of developing confidence has to do with taking action and it's the same with that too because most people think that I'll be confident and then I'll go try something new or I'll go take a risk. But it works the other way it's actually when I take the risk or take action that's when I develop confidence so there are 3 main ways that people can do it I don't know if you're old enough to join to remember John f. Kennedy during his moment during his day but have you ever seen him on film or tapes yes yes yes to the 1st in the us to the 2nd yes that's a that's a guy who exude confidence yes definitely I mean he had he had it in the debate with the breach of Nixon and he had it in his presentations and everything else I mean he had it right right well you know when you when you are also passionate about something and and you were going after that goal or you're going after that dream you're sort of on purpose and then going after something with that level of purpose and commitment but then also host people exude confidence what is the emotional mastery training program you created you know you think of it when my mind's kind of bringing the whole approach them in the book to life so what I want to do is to show people how to be able to respond to what's happening in their life versus be impulsive or reactive or help them stop with stop with drawing from pursuing things that they want to pursue in life so it's really to help people and approach to help people manage their thinking feeling and behavior way more effectively yammer on how we're the film director producer and I had to do a little snippet for you on the book he did indeed that's true I do know him and he was very gracious about doing that just kind of funny a couple weeks ago I saw him as Opie in a little less snippet on the end of Griffith thing right and I just I for some reason my mind blanked out and I couldn't remember his name I said oh no there's nobody but you know I know he's a grown up now he's a director if what's his name all of a sudden about 15 minutes later. I'm flipping the channels and up pops Ron Howard of course him in there it is there's my answer and what a great guy he is now he is is actually a very warm and generous human being get him I get him for my show if you can I'd love to why universe you him I you know what I have a link that he can absolutely do that he made like that I ran into Russell Crowe a couple weeks ago in Los Angeles and I do a program called ancient aliens for the History Channel and as I was walking by him I said I got to say hi to him and I said Russell I love your work and he stopped and he looked at me and went You're the ancient alien guy I just watched you today and he gave me his phone number and he wants to come on the show in September was so we're going to work that out well that's great no if you if you're serious about I want to run on I yeah I'd love to yes I will I will reach out to to a friend of mine who will make a more direct not Ok we've got a lot of Hollywood people who've come on the program so he he probably you could help like him he'd be on for a couple hours and he'll take questions like you will next hour yes well so when you look at an individual can you tell we're right away if they lack some of these ways of handling these a difficult feelings in just the way they act and talk. Through their talking more than sometimes through their acting but definitely through their talking and it's it's very interesting because I just I was in an Apple store buying our group working on getting some problem worked out in the woman that was helping me told me that she was anxious. And so I looked at her and I said I said Are you open to a couple questions she said sure and the so the 1st question I asked is How well do you manage your unpleasant feelings or allies of experience them she said not I try to stay away from them and I said how well you speak up and allow yourself to say the things that are important to you whether they're you know I like you and I would like to spend more time with you or that they are disappointed you know by something someone did and she said I don't do that either well that's why she's anxious. You know I also react to people when I see how they handle a crisis you know some people handle it perfectly other people panic. Some people are cool and collected right it's really important I think to want to watch people like that in you know for example. I had a neighbor years ago whose little kid fell off a ladder and totally lost it lost control where. Somebody else was able to step in and you know get the kid up you know called 911 got everything handled right now everything worked out fine some people just fall apart during a crisis. Right and again I think in those situations George I think people doubt they question what they're doing and they doubt what they are doing they don't trust their own reactions to things and and when they get into a lot of doubt think they get panicky. So again if they if they don't manage things that are upsetting Well then you'll see people fall apart in those kind of situations that's why I think the work is so important it's that it and again it's it's really simple if it's only these 8 feelings I'm talking about. If people can really be able to handle them they can move through life in so much more effect absolutely and again we're human beings we're going to get hit with these 8 difficult feelings and it's a natural isn't it totally It's there every day like I said there every day the most common everyday reactions we have and so anything about stubbing your toe you know that you stub your toe in and the pain lasts for a short bit and then you move on and you go through life but it's teaching people to move through their feeling reactions in a similar manner and the feeling reactions are short lived and in us in the same way that a stubbed toe it but people don't usually see it that way by the way why is a baby told that in the most painful of all of them. I can answer that can tell you literally just shut you down when you stop it that's right that one of the scope of my knowledge base I don't know self-criticism is that healthy or not oh my god so damaging George isn't really my thing I think of. Of harsh self criticism or negative self talk as one of the most damaging things someone can do to them even if they say I could have done this better except that self-criticism dippers and there's a difference between saying I can do this better and idiot or I'm so stupid. And one is constructive and leads you to the next thing and is absent blame or judgement or attack and the other one has lame judgement attack to it it's and when I will when I watch people do it I think as bad as people feel when they're just dealing with unpleasant feelings if they layer harsh criticism on top of that it takes them down a deep dark spiral that is much worse than just dealing with the they don't fuss and feelings so and what's interesting is I also see her self criticism as a distraction from those same 8 feelings it's like a fox Hi Jack. Oh the feelings what about negativity there's negativity bring you down yes and I will look at negativity in disguised grief Yeah I want to know we're going to take a quick break we're going to come back and take phone calls with you Dr John Rosenberg with us 90 seconds to a life you love and that's the name of the book we'll tell you where you can get that as well so let's take your questions for her war your story some of these a difficult feelings maybe you want to share a little story with us or to we'll take that when we come back in a moment on coast to coast am and again our Web site is linked up at coast to coast am dot com She also has a Facebook and Twitter.
