GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — There are still many opportunities to get involved with the local community this holiday season.
Courtney Sheffer, Marketing Director for West Michigan Tourist Association (WMTA), joined Fox 17 live to share a few fun winter break ideas that are safe for all families.
First, Grand Rapids Public Museum is hosting Snowflake Break Camps for students in 1st through 6th grade. They can participate either in-person or virtually to explore science, history, and culture. This takes place Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from December 21 to 30. ....

Children saving Dublin Zoo!


The generosity of Realt na Mara pupils came roaring to life last week as they donated €800 to Dublin zoo, and adopted a host of animals from giraffes and elephants to snow leopards and zebras.
The plight of Dublin zoo s animals was highlighted recently with a huge fundraising drive to secure the future of the Phoenix Park facility.
COVID-19 restrictions and the zoo closure for many months in 2020 saw a massive drop in funds vital to feed and care for the range of animals living there.
Realt na Mara teacher Emmajane Larkin said she felt a real need to help. I first heard about it reported on the RTE news that the future of Dublin Zoo was uncertain after closing their gates for the second time this year due to COVID. I have very fond memories of visiting Dublin Zoo as a child with my family and therefore when I heard about the Animal Adoption Programme, I was eager to get to involve. ....

Two New Protected Areas in Nepal's Himalayas - Rainforest Trust Saves Rainforest


Rainforest Trust and our long-time partner, KTK-BELT have recently created two protected areas in Nepal’s Himalayas totalling 261,557 acres––that’s one-third larger than New York City. This is the biggest step so far in our joint multi-year, multi-project mission to save habitat in a “belt” from the country’s lowlands, all the way up to the Himalayas through community outreach and land protection.

The most recent of these designations took place this month with the creation of the Lungbasamba Landscape Biocultural Heritage and Ecotourism Special Conservation Zone, spanning 176,630-acres of high-altitude rugged mountain landscape. This followed our success in September––establishing the 84,927-acre Topkegola Biocultural Heritage and Ecotourism Special Conservation Zone.
