Lynchburg-area economic development offices celebrate successes during pandemic


This week, localities nationwide recognized the work economic developers do to create vibrant communities with strong economies during National Economic Development Week, which runs from May 9 to 15.
Locally, economic officials have powered through an unprecedented pandemic and still assisted in company expansions and openings, provided grants to businesses and helped them retain their workforce.
In 2020, the Lynchburg Office of Economic Development and Tourism assisted multiple companies, including Bausch + Lomb, which invested more than $35 million to expand its manufacturing facility to provide U.S. distribution for its contact lens products and create 79 new jobs over the next five years.
In January 2020, Flowers Foods, one of the nation’s largest producers of packaged baked foods, announced a $25 million investment to expand and transform its Lynchburg bakery into an organic facility, creating 15 new jobs. The bakery, which the company has operated for more t ....

San Francisco International Airport s Harvey Milk Terminal 1 has earned the Fitwel Best in Building Health Award from the Center for Active Design.
According to a news release, Fitwel is a building rating system that provides guidelines on how to design, construct, and operate healthier buildings. In the Retail v2.1 category, SFO and the design-build team of Hensel Phelps, A Gensler/Kuth Ranieri Joint Venture won the design award for the Terminal 1 Center project, part of the $2.4 billion Harvey Milk Terminal 1 Redevelopment Program.
Harvey Milk Terminal 1 was designed with the health of both our passengers and employees in mind, airport director Ivar C. Satero stated in a March 25 news release. Achieving Fitwel certification for this terminal a first in the world helped us to establish a new benchmark for the airport experience. ....

DNR Continues PFAS Drinking Water Well Sampling In Town Of Peshtigo


Residents Encouraged Opt-In For Free Test
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced it will continue to sample drinking water wells in an Expanded Site Investigation Area in the Town of Peshtigo due to the potential presence of groundwater contaminated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The DNR will use state funds for the sampling effort, which is scheduled to begin this spring.
Beginning today, the DNR will mail information to more than 200 property owners in the Town of Peshtigo who have not yet opted to have their well sampled by the DNR. The packets include a potable well survey questionnaire, a property access permission agreement, an expanded site investigation area map with last year’s test results and information about the sampling effort. ....
