New programs established by the Presidential Task Force on Race, Ethnicity, and Community are already making an impact on the UGA campus. Over the last year President Jere W. Morehead committed $1 million in private resources from the UGA Athletic Association to implement 16 initiatives to foster a more welcoming and supportive learning environment for Black and other underrepresented members of our community.
Vice President for Student Affairs Victor Wilson led a 16-member Task Force that collected hundreds of recommendations from across the UGA community. The group completed its work in December and accepted recommendations are now being implemented. These initiatives, listed below, total over $1 million in funds invested or allocated to fulfill the charge of this Task Force. ....

Faculty and staff program will help build supportive campus community.
A University of Georgia pilot program launching this month involving faculty and staff will further the university’s efforts to foster a more welcoming and supportive campus community.
Based on recommendations issued by the Presidential Taskforce on Race, Ethnicity, and Community, a committee established by UGA President Jere W. Morehead in 2020, the university is implementing a pilot Reflective Structured Dialogue (RSD) training, beginning this year with two groups of UGA faculty and staff.
RSD builds the capacity of communities and organizations to engage, live and thrive despite their differences through a dialogue process that shifts the goal of conversation from problem solving to mutual understanding. ....

Wellesley looks to combat racism and hate


They could have been separated by race. Instead, they were united by mutual respect.
Lillian Stokes is gone now. Henry Petrilli, almost 95, eventually moved from Illinois to Wellesley and then to North Hill in Needham.
Time and distance didn t change Petrilli s admiration for the woman he thought of as the sister I never had. The two met on the job, while working for the Illinois Department of Welfare. It was wartime, and Lillian took over her husband s job while he was in the service.
Lillian was Black. Petrilli, 19 at the time, is white, and Lillian was the first black person he really got to know. As the two co-workers became friends over the the next three years, Petrilli gained insight into what it meant to be part of a society where skin color defined one s place. ....
