The civil rights of 1875 which prohibited discrimination in public accommodations and 80 years would pass before the civil rights act of 1964. so, part of this advancement and regression is almost, it s cyclical in terms of american society. we seem to be on the edge with the gression of some suppression of voter rights laws that will be in place in multiple states across the country. also people who are looking at this broadcast who are in this crowd today and who are at home listening on the radio would say, i will take. i will do something about it. all the states that passed these laws that rise up and tell their members we got to pull away. the sad thing when i was in the georgia legislature we used to say thank god for mississippi because mississippi was always worse than georgia. now we have to say thank god for north carolina because north carolina has become the new mississippi. you know, brian, let s talk about north carolina. ....

Everybody regardless of our political affiliation should hold dear and true those fundamental principles of what it means to be an american. pillar number one, the right to vote, the right to speak your voice regardless of your socioeconomic status, gender, who you love, religion. one man, one vote. why in the greatest democracy on the face of the earth would a party that proclaims to care about those principles try to crush the votes of some groups. it s un-american, undemocratic and we cannot stand for it. so many folks paid a price for this. we forget how far we ve come as a nation. we are a nation of progress, not regression. so again, political affiliation out the door, this is about a sense of fairness. in ohio this should not be happening in ohio. they just introduced a bill, professor, to cut early voting days and take away the last three days of early voting. on this point about the folks who have struggled, i want to ....

Interrupt that. so i think that there is a long way to go in terms of our economic standing, in terms of the masses. i think there s a long way to go in terms of our dealing with those state laws that try to undermine it. the most egregious is that we are now even seeing a regression in our voting rights. when we look at the supreme court taking out section four, we look at north carolina and texas and other states trying to come with voter suppression schemes, we are not only going not moving forward in some areas, we are threatened with going backwards. this is the first time in 48 years that we don t have preclearance in the justice department before districts or states with histories of discrimination can do anything. that has never happened before. that alone is a reason for this march tomorrow. and joy, you hear some of the economic indicators that rev speaks about, about not having made progress in the last five ....

Minority. we ve done through a number of cycles like this in our history. we fought a civil war. we had reconstruction. african-americans got equal rights in the south. there were prominent african-american elected officials. then we had the reaction. the southerners who threw out the reconstruction government, called themselves redeemers. i m sure the confederate avenger identifies with those redeemers. then we went through a long period of real regression, you know, until the time that w.e.b. deboy started writing. it took him a long time. we went backwards on race and went forward again in the civil rights years. i think what s really disturbing right now is there was a long time where even people who had been against the civil rights bills felt an obligation to speak in a certain way about race. felt an obligation to say i believe in the equal dignity of immigrants and of african-americans. since obama s election and maybe a little bit before that, we ....
