A popular leader or public figure who inspires others is also called an idol. However, to refer to images and statues of gods and goddesses as idols, could carry with it a negative connotation.

Andrew Casper, associate professor of art history at Miami University, released his latest book, “An Artful Relic: The Shroud of Turin in Baroque Italy” (Pennsylvania State University Press) on Sept. 29.
