A lost hiker was found alive after a helpful stranger successfully tracked his location using only the photo he sent earlier to a friend, authorities announced Tuesday.
Rene Compean, 46, was reported missing in the Los Angeles National Forest at about 6 p.m. Monday by a friend who got a text from the hiker informing him that he was lost.  Compean sent his friend a picture of the surroundings of his location. His phone was almost out of battery, and he didn't know how to go back home, so he knew he was in danger.

Missing hiker rescued after Twitter user tracks him down using his last-sent photo

A photo may very well have saved a missing hiker's life this week. 46-year-old hiker Rene Compean was reported missing near Mount Waterman in southern California on Monday evening. After disseminating a photo online that Compean had sent to a friend earlier on Monday, authorities located Compean on Tuesday.
While hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains, located about 50 miles northeast of Los Angeles, Rene Compean realized he was lost. His cellphone battery was dying, so he snapped a photo of his feet hanging over rocks and sent the image to his friend, along with the message that he was lost. Compean's friend alerted authorities and provided them the image later that day.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. (KCBS) - A hiker who got lost in California’s Angeles National Forest is now safe after a satellite mapping enthusiast used a single picture to find him.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said rescuers found the hiker, 45-year-old Rene Compean, on Tuesday after he spent a night alone in the wilderness.
“You don’t think that sitting behind a computer and looking at a picture and going, ‘Oh hey, that looks like it might be where he is,’ would result in someone getting rescued,” said Benjamin Kuo.

Hungry. Lost. Tired. Cold.

A hiker who went missing in California was found to be safe, thanks to his last “mystery” photo and the “weird hobby” of a man to likes to track locations from pictures people share.
Rene Compean, 45, went missing on Monday after he went on a hike at a popular ski destination in the San Gabriel Mountains in Southern California.
The 45-year-old texted his picture to a friend from his outdoor adventure, showing his legs dangling from a precipice with a view of a canyon beneath and the slopes in the distance. He told him his phone battery is running low and he was lost. Shortly after, he went off the map.
