I would like to introduce the first session which is entitled bullying trends where we have been, where we are now and where we are going. We have three excellent speakers for the session. First up is mr. Tom snyder from the department of education. He is the director of annual reports and information staff at the National Center for Education Statistics and is a recognized expert on Education Statistics. I was on a panel with denise and dewey corp nel where we talked about a school perspective. This is where the body of literature is the largest, i would like to say the strongest but there are still a lot of gaps in this particular area. Denise talked a lot about school climate. I was happy to hear that was picked up in the themes today and talked about legal issues and policies and zero tolerance and some of the reactive approaches that schools often take about video cameras and metal detectors. We dont have research to show they have a strong impact on reducing bullying. I spoke about meta analysis and research about particular programs. I had this graphic in my talk about is the Glass Half Full or half empty . You can view it in terms of the review of literature. Some programs can reduce bullying. However, some of the studies are done abroad and may not generalize very well to the

And were also here to raise education and awareness, to let people know theres hope, and suicide is preventible. Theres so many facets to all that you do. I unfortunately lost my husband of 29 years years ago to the battle of depression. He was very well known in the d. C. Area. Showed very few signs. He had suffered from depression. It did run in his family. But at the same time, really seemed as if he was getting the help that he needed and we were providing him support. But unfortunately, it just wasnt enough, that the pain just got to be too much for him. So ive had to deal with that for the last three years. I know a big part of what you do there at sp is to reach out to people who are left behind by suicide. How important is it for people that you see day to day to realize that theyre not alone in this, that theres a community of other people out there ready to welcome them in and help them . Its really critical. I didnt even really know about afsp until after the loss of paul. I ....
