Hawaii has temporarily shut down a beach in Maui's Makena State Park after maskless revelers repeatedly ignored COVID-19 restrictions and gathered in large groups for Sunday parties.
The state's Department of Land and Natural Resources cited one incident Sunday, Jan. 3, at Pu’u Ola’i beach, the smaller of two beaches located in the state park. A large party with an estimated 400 people included drum circles, nudity, illicit substances and alcohol, but few masks and little to no social distancing.
