PROVIDENCE Rhode Island Family Court Chief Judge Michael B. Forte is seeking state Senate approval of the appointment of two magistrates to the court that oversees child custody, juvenile and divorce proceedings. Forte appointed Daniel V. Ballirano, currently acting deputy personnel administrator in charge of labor relations for the state Department of Administration, and Warwick lawyer Denise Cassisi Finkleman as Family Court magistrates, subject to advice and consent of the state Senate. In a letter on Tuesday, Forte notified Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerrio of his selections for the 10-year posts that pay a $148,460 annual base salary. Under state law, magistrates can hear and determine all motions, pretrial conferences, arraignments of juvenile offenders and probable-cause hearings, and review matters such as temporary placement, custody and adoption of children.
