Physicists in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis are helping to shape the theoretical framework behind exciting new experiments at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams.
With five more protons than should be stable, the newly discovered nitrogen-9 isotope sits right on the borderline of physical possibility.
A highly unstable nucleus that decays by emitting five protons has been observed, offering an extreme case for testing nuclear models.
With seven protons and two neutrons, the lopsided atomic nucleus of nitrogen-9 pushes the limits of what can even be considered a nucleus.
A newly discovered very short-lived isotope of nitrogen, nitrogen-9, is, basically, an alpha particle with five extra protons.
