Irish goods exports increased in value by €2 billion in November on the back of a surge in exports of medical and pharmaceutical products linked to the pandemic.
The latest trade numbers from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show the value of goods exports rose month on month by 17 per cent to €14.4 billion in November.
The strong performance was led by exports of medical and pharmaceutical products, which were up by 74 per cent at nearly €7 billion compared with November 2019. ....

The project aims at improving the quality of life of people living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a rare neuromuscular disease.
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a severe, inherited, progressive neuromuscular disease that causes devastating muscle atrophy and disease-related complications. It is the most common genetic cause of infant mortality and one of the most common rare diseases, affecting approximately one in 11,000 babies. SMA leads to the progressive loss of nerve cells in the spinal cord that controls muscle movement. Depending on the type of SMA, an individual’s physical strength and their ability to walk, eat or breathe can be significantly diminished or lost. ....

Roche’s Tecentriq/Avastin combo improves survival in liver cancer

Roche is planning to present updated data confirming that its immunotherapy combination, consisting of Tecentriq (atezolizumab) and Avastin (bevacizumab), improves overall survival (OS) in patients with a type of liver cancer.
The OS data is from the Phase III IMbrave150 study, evaluating Tecentriq plus Avastin compared to sorafenib, in people with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who have not received prior systemic therapy.
An updated analysis – conducted after a median follow-up of 15.6 months – found that Tecentriq plus Avastin reduced the risk of death by 34%, with a median OS of 19.2 months, compared with 13.4 months for sorafenib. ....

About the IMbrave150 study
IMbrave150 is a global Phase III, multicentre, open-label study of 501 people with unresectable HCC who had not received prior systemic therapy. People were randomised 2:1 to receive the combination of Tecentriq and Avastin or sorafenib. The Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes expressed doubt that a religious order had no knowledge where the majority of some 900 babies who died at its institution were buried.
Bessborough in Blackrock, Cork, was run by the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary from 1922 until 1998, with 9,768 women and 8,938 children passing through it. Of those children some 923 died as infants. ....
