Sacred Hearts School Students Craft Birthday Cards for 105-Year-Old Army Veteran

Students at Sacred Hearts School in Bradford took part in helping to celebrate a 105-year-old Army veteran’s birthday this past Feb. 28.
It all started with a Facebook post by Honor Flight New England, an organization that transports America’s veterans to the memorials in Washington, D.C. and is dedicated to their honor and sacrifice. They put the call out that veteran Louise Fleming was turning 105 years old. She was an Army nurse who served in Italy during World War II and had taken a trip with them to the Washington, D.C. memorials. ....

Leger Ferraro Leads Haverhill Chamber Webinar Wednesday on Available State Training Grants

The Greater Haverhill Chamber hosts a Workforce Development Training Grant Opportunities webinar tomorrow morning with Susan Leger Ferraro of G3 Consulting.
Ferraro is discussing the Workforce Training Fund Program that provides grants from $10,000-$250,000 to Massachusetts employers to train current full-time and part-time employees. The state fund is financed by a surcharge on unemployment insurance payments and any organization that pays unemployment insurance is eligible.
Her presentation takes place online Wednesday, March 10, 11 a.m.-noon. Admission is free for Haverhill Chamber members and $10 for nonmembers. Those interested may register online at haverhillchamber.com or email Melissa Seavey at [email protected]. ....

Man Associated with Methuen Drug 'Stash House' Receives More Than 15-Year Prison Sentence

A 34-year-old, former Lawrence man was sentenced to more than 15 years in prison for his role in operating a Methuen drug “stash house” where more than 10 kilograms fentanyl and heroin and drug processing equipment were seized in 2018.
Carlos Soto-Villar was sentenced Friday by U.S. District Court Judge Patti B. Saris to 188 months in prison and five years of supervised release. He will be subject to deportation to the Dominican Republic after completing the sentence. Soto-Villar was convicted last October by a federal jury of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute one kilogram or more of heroin and 400 grams or more of fentanyl. ....

Congresswoman Lori Trahan toured Greater Lawrence Family Health Center’s Lawrence vaccination site Friday, applauding President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan that makes investments in community health centers on the front lines.
She said the federal stimulus legislation helps the Health Center care for COVID-positive patients and vaccinate as many people in Haverhill, Lawrence and Methuen as possible. The relief package provides $7.6 billion to further support COVID-19 response efforts at community health centers. ....

Haverhill’s mayor said he did not have any advance notice of the state’s plans to return to in-person learning when he proposed last month a full school return in April.
An 8-3 vote by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education Friday afternoon gave state Education Commissioner Jeffrey Riley extraordinary powers to end remote and hybrid learning. Riley said he wants to start by having elementary school students return to full in-person learning next month and all classes back by fall. Haverhill Education Association President Anthony J.
